I have recently read this book by Jennifer Thomson, and have to say that it is one of the most informative and easy to understand I have read. Being the owner of a 5-year-old Labradoodle who are renowned for their exuberance, I have purchased and read more than my fair share of training and caring for your dogs’ books.

It quickly becomes apparent that Jennifer Thomson knows what she is talking about, so it is no surprise to hear she has owned dogs all her life – and it was one dog in particular who inspired her to write the book, also including a chapter on dogs with special needs, such as epilepsy, as her dog Vic suffered from this condition.

This book is concise and to the point, guiding you through from bringing your puppy home, their adolescent years and beyond. There is a great chapter on feeding (including what not to feed them), exercise and the importance of getting each element right to ensure you have a happy and healthy dog.

There’s informative details on travelling with your dog and the laws you must abide by as a responsible dog owner. The books also covers the pros and cons of pet insurance and finally a chapter all about what to consider when rehoming/adopting a dog and the positive impact you could have on a dog’s life, even though he or she may not have had the greatest start.

If I was going to sum this book up in a sentence I would say it is a comprehensive, user-friendly guide to support you in ensuring that you and your dog live life to the full, allowing you to refer back if you need to double check anything, or simply need a little reassurance.

Dog cancer is a subject that is not usually talked about very often, but dog cancer, much like human cancer is caused by damaged DNA that can cause an uncontrolled increase in cells. An exposure to carcinogens such as smoke, pesticides, additives and preservatives all impose a risk to a dog over time.

Sometimes a dog may have inherited damaged DNA which may result in an inherited cancer but this is not too common. There is a correlation between the dog’s age and the chances of the dog contracting cancer. Worryingly cancer is now the leading reason for death in dogs older than 10 years.

Aimee Quemuel’s book “The 42 Rules to Fight Dog Cancer” has been written from the viewpoint of 21 owners who have all had a dog with cancer. The book aims to give owners advice, real success stories, tips and treatment plans. The website also offers a database in where owners can search a database to see how other owners have coped with their dog’s illness.

Quemuel is also donating $1 from every purchase from the books to many different dog charities. Some of the ones to benefit from this will be; The Morris foundation, Canine Cancer Awareness, The Magic Bullet Fund and the National Canine Cancer Foundation. Quemuel also called the project a “True passion” rather than a money making scheme.
Quemel added:

“Originally, the book and the site were going to focus on my personal journey and my dog Cody’s cancer success story, But I soon discovered that there were many dog cancer success stories to be told.”

The book is available to buy online now.

One of the world’s most popular dogs is to get a book deal documenting life as he knows it, or as his owners know it, presumably.

Boo, the Pomeranian, is well known amongst friends and followers on social media sites such as Facebook and YouTube. The loveable Pomeranian has over 1.1 million followers on its Facebook Page and some of the YouTube videos have racked up almost 800,000 views each. The dog has become so popular that T-shirts and many more items of merchandise are widely available on the internet promoting his accomplishments.

However, the dog’s mission for international stardom is not stopping there. Now an announcement has been made that there is going to be a book released titled “Boo the Life of the World’s Cutest Dog, is about being a little dog in a big world.” Chronicle books said.

Jennifer Kong, who wrote the review, also added “I discovered Boo after a friend posted the below picture on Facebook. I was instantly enamoured. When I pitched the idea of a Boo book to our publishing group, everyone got really excited. At the time Boo had 60,000 fans, and we knew he was on the verge of blowing up.”

The book, written by his owner J.H Lee, is filled with photos documenting the lifestyle that the dog leads. Fans of the cute canine are able to start pre-ordering their copies of the book, which is due to be released sometime in the summer.

The book goes on sale for a total of $12.95 and will be available to purchase on the 20th July.

<a href="http://www.dreamdogs.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/laughing-dog.jpg"title="Laughing dog" >It was suggested by animal psychologist Nobel Prize winner Konrad Lorenz in his book Man Meets Dog that dogs are capable of laughing just like humans.

Sometimes when you take a picture of your dog his mouth will be open, his pink tongue hanging out and you just know that he is either laughing with you or at you.

A man (or woman) and dog who have that special bond will love to go and play out in the park or garden.

Watching your dog running after a ball or a soft toy will lead to him stopping and ‘panting’. This quick breathing technique is not down to your pet being out of breath, but is reportedly a social panting that can be regarded as an inadvertent reflective response.

Other animals use these breathing techniques when they are playing with other animals and playmates held in captivity such as a zoo.

Films that were made years ago showed monkeys hooting with laughter while showing off a full set of gleaming teeth.

If you own a puppy or a dog that is nervous, forget the necessary doggie training techniques for a while and have fun. A pet that has fun with their owner will start to build up confidence in them and learn how to relax.

A dog who learns to relax is one that is not stressed and will in time learn the training commands that you want from him.

<a href="http://www.dreamdogs.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/cooking_for_your_dog.jpg"title="Cooking For Your Dog recipe book" >Some dogs need a special diet, others are quite happy and healthy on the ‘usual’ dog’s dinner so to speak. In Britain, we know we have an obesity problem and that it has probably stemmed from the association of food with love and it is the same with our animals. Some people absolutely dote on their pets but how far would you go for your dog’s diet? Would you perhaps buy a cookbook especially for your dog and spend hours cooking for him?

That’s the idea behind ‘Cooking for your dog’ from Paragon Books which contains recipes such as home baked biscuits, vegatable mash with boiled chicken and a number of other dishes that would take several hours to prepare and some of which look almost fit to eat! There are special recipes for weight control, unwell dogs and even to relieve constipation. Some of the recipes also contain ingredients such as cottage cheese, milk and eggs and not all dogs can stomach such dairy products so maybe not all the recipes are that suitable for dogs.

The idea of the book is fine but other than giving it as a novelty gift, I really cannot see people spending hours over the oven to cook for their dog in this way unless they have very little else in their life.

If you’re a dog lover, the chances are you’ve spent many an evening trying to photograph your dog, attempting to get a picture that fully captures their personality. We’ve all tried, but all too often the dog refuses to play ball, or in some cases opts to ‘actually’ play ball when you’re trying to get their attention. They look away, run off and just won’t recreate the poses you know they’re capable of just because you’ve got your camera out.

Help is at hand however from a new book, which comes out on November 1st, and offers invaluable tips on how to take great photos of your dog. The book, PhoDOGraphy: How to Get Great Pictures of Your Dog, is available for pre-order from Amazon and features 144 pages of pictures and advice on taking better photos of your dog. It also offers tips on what angle to use, whether to use colour or black and white and various other tricks of the trade.

If you’ve a new picture frame and don’t know which photo of your dog to put in it, don’t jump to any rash decisions before you’ve read the book and had a go at taking some new photos.
