Police dogs used to find former RAF pensioner

by Lianne Wilkinson on September 20, 2008

A former RAF serviceman has disappeared from his home in Edinburgh. He was last seen near a bus stop 3 weeks ago. The pensioner, Alan Goulden, is being sought by police, who have questioned locals in attempt to locate him. The man, sixty-four-years-old, is diabetic and his supply of insulin was found in his house.

The police are now using police dogs to try to locate the pensioner, and track him down before (more…)

Paris Hilton’s dogs have not been eaten by coyotes

by Darren Jamieson on September 19, 2008

Perennial wannabe Paris Hilton was the subject of Internet rumours yesterday surrounding her dogs. The rumours stated that two of her dogs had been attacked and eaten by a coyote as they played outside her home.

However the rumours have been denied by one of her aids, stating that all seventeen of her dogs are fine and well. The representative of the twenty-seven-year-old hotel heiress stated:

They were at Paris’ house Wednesday in her recording studio, and all the dogs were (more…)

Army dogs living in squalor

by Darren Jamieson on September 18, 2008

Every dog lover pampers their pooch, giving them the best they can and, often in the case of many of us, spoiling them rotten. Dogs who work for the Army however, are living in squalor, it seems.

When you consider these dogs put their life on the line for their country, and their handlers, they deserve to be treated much better than they are. Reports from tabloid paper ‘The Sun’ have revealed however that the dogs are living in confinement, for more than 20 hours per day in some cases.

Dogs such as Labradors, Spaniels and German Shepherds are being treated as (more…)

Dogs Trust Joins Anti-Kennel Club Campaign

by Lianne Wilkinson on September 17, 2008

Well it seems the BBC’s Pedigree Dogs Exposed programme has really started something now – and about time. The Dogs Trust, Britain’s largest dog charity, has now joined the furore and withdrawn its support for Crufts over the controversial breeding news.

As we reported yesterday, the RSPCA has cut all links with the Kennel Club, organisers of Crufts, Discover Dogs and many other dog shows and events.

The Dogs Trust Chief Executive, Clarissa Baldwin, has demanded, as we did a few weeks ago, that the Kennel Club review all its breed standards to take the focus away from the aesthetics of the breed, especially where the breed standards refer to ‘small head’ or other such vague descriptions that seem to encourage breeders to attempt to breed a (more…)

RSPCA Joins Anti-Kennel Club Campaign

by Darren Jamieson on September 16, 2008

Following on from our recent articles and debate about the state of the UK’s pedigree dogs, it comes as no surprise really that the RSPCA is now getting involved. With all the publicity, they couldn’t really continue to stay quiet any longer I imagine. I can’t help feeling what a shame it is that it has taken this long to come to light.

Are they seriously saying that they hadn’t noticed any issues until now? And surely, now that it has been brought to their attention, they should be working with the Kennel Club to resolve the problem rather than just backing away? I think the RSPCA is doing a bit of a PR stunt to minimise any possible damage to their own reputation.

Anyway, the RSPCA has got on the bandwagon now and is saying that next year it will (more…)

Dog saves child from hypoglycaemic attack

by Lianne Wilkinson on September 15, 2008

Labradors are known for their ability to act as guide dogs for the blind, but Bianca, a black labrador-retriever cross, has been trained to notify four-year-old Noah’s parents when he’s suffering a hypoglycaemic attack during the night.

Noah suffers from Diabetes, and his parents, Sam and Keith Beeby-Brown live on tenterhooks that Noah could suffer an attack during the night. They check on Noah several times during the night, meaning they are unable to get a full night’s sleep.

Noah has already suffered an attack during the night, two months ago, and Bianca (more…)

Chihuahuas are one of the most destructive dogs in the world, it’s official!

by Clare Jones on September 14, 2008

If you’re particularly house proud, you may be wondering what breed of dog is the most destructive in your home. Large dogs can be destructive, but smaller ones are just as bad, it seems.

According to the home insurance provider, Esure, the little Chihuahua is the second most destructive dog breed, and has been responsible for the second highest amount of insurance claims due to damage created by a dog.

The Chihuahua, just pipped by the (more…)

Mr Dog becomes Cesar

by Darren Jamieson on September 13, 2008

Cesar is a well known brand of dog food aimed at small dogs, but few people who buy Cesar for their dog realise that the brand was originally named something very different, something aimed specifically at male dogs, or stud dogs, rather than bitches.

Indeed, Cesar was originally named ‘Mr Dog’, which despite its name was still very successful at the time. However, the fact that ‘Mr Dog’ clearly alienated bitches was a cause for concern for the manufacturers, and a cause for a comedy routine for Eddie Izzard. Eddie made fun at the way the makers of Mr Dog decided to (more…)

Blind man thrown out of eye hospital because of guide dog

by Lianne Wilkinson on September 12, 2008

Mark Brierley, a blind man, was asked to leave Manchester’s Royal Eye Hospital because staff didn’t want him to be there with his guide dog. Twenty seven year old Mark was at the eye hospital with his partner Karen, who was there for an operation on her eye, to remove an implant.

However when they arrived, Mark’s guide dog Usher caused staff to turn him away, saying he wasn’t welcome on the ward. He was asked to (more…)

Dogs left in hot car freed by Police

by Clare Jones on September 11, 2008

Dog owner Matthew James Evans was fined this week for leaving his two Labrador dogs suffering in his car on a baking hot day in May this year. He received a £150 fine, £235 legal costs and was forced to stump up £1,414 in boarding costs for the two dogs. He claimed he didn’t realise that the dogs were in danger, even though the temperature was 28 degrees.

The dogs were found by the RSPCA in his Renault Scenic, with the sun beating down on the car. The two dogs had no water, and were (more…)
