A dog from Macclesfield, in Cheshire, has won a top military award for bravery after saving countless lives in several tours of Afghanistan.

Corporal David Heyhoe’s loyal dog ‘Treo’ was voted the finest animal in the Armed Forces at a ceremony hosted by national tabloid ‘The Sun’ earlier this month. Treo, a black Labrador, was nearly put down when he was younger as he was out of control, but like so many adolescents before him, he joined the army and it ‘straightened him out’.

Christmas is the time of miracles, and especially for one dog from South Wales that had been abandoned, winding up in Cardiff Dogs Home. Staff of the dogs home wanted to find homes for Sebastian, the brindle mastiff cross, and eleven other dogs in their ‘twelve dogs of Christmas’ campaign. They ran the campaign in the South Wales Echo, and in the run up to Christmas had managed to house eight of the twelve dogs, including Sebastian, who had been abandoned in a field.

Deborah Preece from Ely, in Cardiff, was touched by the campaign in the Echo and offered to give a home to Sebastian. Deborah says:

As soon as I saw him I fell in love with him. He took to me really quickly. He jumped on me so much I fell over!

It broke my heart when I read the story in the paper and my husband agreed we should do something.

In a story that seems like it has been lifted straight out of a Disney movie, or from a Benji film, a dog that was stolen 12 months ago has just been returned it its owner in time for Christmas. The dog, a Jack Russell terrier cross named Purdy, is now safely home with her owner, a nine-year-old disabled girl from Staffordshire

The dog vanished last January when she was a puppy, and her owner Emma Mathews, who suffers from cystic fibrosis, was distraught at the prospect of never seeing her dog again.

Developers in York are planning to build a new £100,000 swimming pool, but it’s not for people. No, this swimming pool is to be exclusively for dogs, and it will be a state of the art swimming pool, complete with massage jets and a hoist.

The swimming pool is intended to nurse injured dogs back to health, and is planned to be built at Northminster Business Park by Canine Hydrotherapy Ltd.

As if ASBOs weren’t bad enough, with children treating them as badges of honour, something that can be earned, plans are now afoot to give ASBOs to dogs! Furthermore, the plans have been backed by postman, in their ongoing war against the canine breed.

According to statistics over 6,000 postmen get attacked by dogs every year in the UK. The Communication Workers’ Union (CWU), made up of postmen, has backed plans by the Scottish parliament to introduce a new bill that promises to help protect posties from dogs.

Dave Joyce of the CWU stated:

We are calling for cross-party backing for the Bill and we want the rest of the UK to follow Scotland’s lead.
