Four month old deaf puppy has been taught sign language

by Lianne Wilkinson on January 23, 2009

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but you can certainly teach a new dog new tricks, as a four months old puppy named Snowy has shown. Snowy is deaf, and at just four months old has been taught to recognise and respond to sign language.

Snowy was given to the Dogs Trust in Wiltshire because she was deaf, something that her owners didn’t want to cope with. Undeterred from the fact that Snowy couldn’t hear, the staff of the Dogs Trust set about teaching Snowy sign language, so that she now responds to commands such as ‘sit’, ‘roll over’, ‘lie down’ and ‘come back’.

Now that Snowy responds to sign language, staff hope they’ll be able to find her a home. Leslie Carley, from the Dogs Trust, stated that Snowy was the (more…)

Can you give a home to eight dogs?

by Darren Jamieson on January 22, 2009

Eight dogs have been made homeless and are in need of someone to care for them after their owner tragically died while they were on holiday. Three of the dogs are puppies, and five of the dogs are adult lurcher cross dogs. A friend was looking after the dogs when their owner was away, but after the tragic accident they were taken to the Dogs Trust so that they could be rehomed.

The dogs are now waiting in the Dogs Trust, in Evesham, for someone to give them a home. Chris Slight, from Evesham’s Dogs Trust, stated:

These poor dogs were clearly loved and well looked after and when they arrived at our centre they were very confused and unsettled at the sudden (more…)

Can dogs suffer from stress?

by Vivien Richardson on January 21, 2009

Dogs can become stressed just the same as their owners. Their behaviour can be withdrawn, unsettled, nervous, and irritable and they may have a change of behaviour by barking and chewing up anything they can get hold of.

At first it may be that they go to the toilet while you are out or they have not been able to last through the night.

The occasions when stress can be recognised are (more…)

Car thieves caught by police dogs

by Darren Jamieson on January 20, 2009

In a scene reminiscent from an episode of Scooby Doo, some car thieves in Croydon, Surrey, would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for those meddling dogs. The car thieves were chased by police dogs in Tooting Bec in Croydon last week after they abandoned their stolen car. The thieves set off on foot, hurdled a fence and were pursued by two police dogs.

Two of the thieves were apprehended by the dogs, but the other thieves escaped capture.

An eye witness described the event:

The police were running around like headless chickens. They didn’t have a police car so they sent for (more…)

by Lianne Wilkinson on January 19, 2009

A lucky driver survived when he crashed his car on the M1, in Yorkshire, and ploughed down a 40ft embankment. The driver, who was driving his Ford Focus with his two pet dogs, was cut free from the crashed car by firefighters, who branded the man and his dogs very lucky to be alive.

It has been revealed what exactly happened with the forty-year-old motorist who crashed his car near Blackburn, on the M1. The man is currently in hospital in Sheffield, recovering with spinal injuries.

How to cope with your dog when moving house

by Vivien Richardson on January 18, 2009

Moving house can be very a stressful time for most of us, and even more stressful for our dogs. The different sounds, unfamiliar sights and smells associated with a new house can upset them. It can take a few weeks for your pet to settle in to their new surroundings.

Here are a few preparations you should take for the move to ensure that dog adjusts quickly:

  1. Make sure your new house is the one for your dog. In rented accommodation, landlords can be fussy so check the (more…)

The Internet used to reunite lost dogs with their owners

by Darren Jamieson on January 17, 2009

The Internet has many uses, and now one of those uses is reuniting lost dogs with their owners, thanks to Newark and Sherwood District Council. The Council is using a website that has been setup with a view to finding the owners of lost dogs.

The council is believed to be the first local authority in the area to use the Internet for this purpose.

Local councillor Nora Armstrong stated:

Hopefully by making these photographs available online we can reunite missing or stray dogs with their owners as quickly as possible. Checking the website will also save (more…)

Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson speaks out for India’s stray dogs

by Lianne Wilkinson on January 16, 2009

Stray dogs are a big problem in Mumbai, India’s financial capital. So much so that when they are caught they are put down. They have a champion though, in the unusual shape of former Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson. Pamela has thrown her weight behind a campaign to neuter stray dogs rather than destroy them.

Pamela states in a letter she sent to Greater Mumbai’s municipal commission:

It is well established that killing stray dogs is not a permanent solution to controlling their populations.

Dogs cannot use condoms, but with the municipality’s help, they can be ‘fixed’ — painlessly, quickly and (more…)

Mickey Rourke appeals for dog owners to neuter their dogs

by Darren Jamieson on January 15, 2009

Actor Mickey Rourke has just won a Golden Globe for his performance in the film ‘The Wrestler’ and is one of the favourites for the Oscars later this year, and in his acceptance speech for the Globe he thanked his pet dogs.

Sometimes when a man is alone, that’s all you’ve got is your dog. They meant the world to me.

Mickey is an avid dog lover, and has even put his considerable weight behind the latest PETA campaign to persuade owners to have their dogs (more…)

Healthy eating for senior dogs

by Vivien Richardson on January 14, 2009

When you buy your puppy you start their diet gently, finding out their likes and dislikes. Doggie adulthood creeps up and before you know it your loveable pet has become a senior citizen all too quickly.

When dogs get older their owners are always asking questions about the changes to their diet. Hopefully some of the questions will be answered (more…)
