Grooming tools for your puppy

by Vivien Richardson on February 16, 2009

There are so many grooming tools available for your dog’s routine it can be difficult to decide which ones are the best for your dog.

Large dogs require a larger brush and comb as their coats can be longer and much thicker. Working dogs tend to have a large wiry overcoat of hair and an under layer of softer hair, therefore two set of (more…)

Sniffer dog hunts big cats

by Lianne Wilkinson on February 15, 2009

Dogs have chased cats for many years out of basic natural instinct, but one dog is chasing cats of a decidedly larger nature. A sniffer dog, trained in Russia, is in Cambodia hunting big cats, tigers to be exact. The dog is helping conservationists to discover if the country has any of the endangered species left.

There has been no trace of the tigers since 2007, and now the Russian sniffer dog is on the case! The sniffer dog, a German pointer named Maggie, is set to sniff out the tigers by looking for (more…)

Manicures for dogs

by Vivien Richardson on

All puppies and dogs require their nails trimming to stop them from becoming too long and painful.

When giving your dog a manicure yourself, never use any house-old scissors or any scissors that are not especially made for your dog’s nails. Pet clippers can be purchased for this job.

This job is a labour of love as the puppy can wriggle and cause you to cut their nails too short. If you’re not careful you can end up cutting the ‘quick’ which is the sensitive area of the nail.

The ‘quick’ is a pink colour, but in a dark haired puppy it can be (more…)

Puppy needs a guide dog of its own

by Darren Jamieson on February 14, 2009

Blind PuppyDogs are used to be trained as guide dogs, but you don’t expect a dog to need its own guide dog. One poor puppy does however, after it was born without any eyes. The collie-Labrador cross, just nine weeks old and named Rose, suffers from a very condition that has meant her eyes have not developed.

The Dogs Trust now wants to find Rose a home that already has a dog who can ‘adopt’ rose and show her the way forward.

Susan Tonner, the manager for the Dogs Trust in West Lothian, stated:

We are looking for a special home for Rose. Blind dogs get a lot of comfort from following around another dog, ideally one that is (more…)

How to give a puppy a bath

by Vivien Richardson on

Once you have a new puppy it is essential you get him or her into a bathing routine.

Depending on how large your dog is and how many times it is going to get dirty, bathing time should be two or three times a year. However some dogs which have long hair require a shampoo and cut every six to eight weeks.

Choose a shampoo and conditioner which suits your puppy, which will depend on the coat of your dog. It is important you use a shampoo that is suitable for dogs, and not your own.

Place a rubber mat or thick towel in the bottom of the bath so the puppy feels (more…)

Woof!

by Darren Jamieson on February 13, 2009

Woof! was a children’s TV series about a boy who turned into a dog. The series ran on CITV for several years, first aired in 1989, and starred the aptly named Edward Fido as Eric, the boy who, when his nose got itchy, turned into a black and white dog. The show also starred Liza Goddard as one of the school teachers at Eric’s school.

The first of the canine actors to play his four legged persona was ‘Pippin’, who was actually one of the puppies sired by a dog that played Benji, in the popular series of films.

Woof! ran until 1997 when it was axed, with only Liza Goddard remaining from the original cast members.

Edward Fido went on to found a theatre company that specialised in comedy.

Tips on caring for your puppy

by Vivien Richardson on February 12, 2009

When considering buying a dog, choosing the correct puppy is the first thing you have to consider. If you have a breed in mind, you have to decide if the breed will fit into your way of life.

There is a rumour that a dog is less trouble than a bitch. This is not necessarily true as a bitch comes into season for three weeks, twice a year. At this time the bitch must be kept indoors as any roaming dogs will be happy to start a new family with her, whether you want them to or not.

How will you match up to looking after a puppy, and will you have the time required for training and walking this new bundle of energy?

Some tips on choosing and caring for your puppy:

Large dogs require a lot of space and need a long walk every morning and night, including the times when the weather is bad.

Small dogs can be effective as a guard as they will bark to let you know a stranger is around.

Training the correct way is important and is also a way of you both interacting. Enrol at dog classes with trained instructors. This can be fun for both of you.

Do not buy a puppy for a toddler as they are not a toy and a puppy will require a lot of attention.

Toddlers do not realise a puppy is not a toy and can be unintentionally cruel.

At holiday time choose a friend to have your puppy or take into account the cost of placing the puppy in kennels while you are away.

Consider the veterinary bills and dog insurance bills which can add up over the months.

When the puppy has grown up, the veterinary bills may increase due to old age.

Litter of puppies saved in Sheffield

by Lianne Wilkinson on

A litter of four Rottweiler-cross puppies was found abandoned in a canal in Sheffield, and survived solely due to the fact that the canal had frozen over, otherwise they would have drowned. The four day-old puppies were stuffed in a bin bag, which was weighted down with a paving slab, and tossed into the canal.

The canal is near Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium. The RSPCA say that the puppies were saved just in time to prevent them catching hypothermia.

The bag containing the puppies was spotted by a walker last weekend, who contacted the RSPCA and the fire department. They arrived quickly and rescued the (more…)

Dog rescued from dog fighting ring needs a home

by Darren Jamieson on

A dog that was rescued from dog fighting in Afghanistan needs a new home. ‘Bear’, the year old dog now lives in West London, as he was rescued by ‘Nowzad Dogs’, a dog’s charity. Staff at the Mayhew Animal Home are hoping that a loving family can be found for the dog.

Paul Farthing, an ex-Royal Marine, rescued Bear before he actually fought, but he had already had his tail and his ears removed, which is common practice for fighting dogs. Bear sat in quarantine for 6 months before arriving at the dog’s home.

Sgt Farthing crated the dog’s charity, named after his pet dog, when he saw dogs fighting for (more…)
