Teen gets jail for cruelty to dogs

by Lianne Wilkinson on

A nineteen-year-old from Swansea has been sentenced to ninety days in a young offenders institute for his actions in administering cruelty to animals. Robert Freeman was asked to look after thirty dogs, some of them just puppies, when his father became ill. Rather than look after the dogs properly, Robert left the dogs in what was described afterwards as ‘concentration camp conditions’.

The court, in Essex, was told how Robert left the dogs unattended, stuck in dog cages which were littered with their own urine and excrement. The dogs had also been left with no (more…)

Dog with three legs gets trapped on a fence

by Darren Jamieson on March 19, 2009

Some dogs have all the luck, and some dogs have none. Jody the bearded collie is one of life’s unlucky dogs. Years ago she was hit by a car and had to have one of her legs amputated, and she recently spent forty-eight hours trapped in barbed wire on a fence by a railway line, unable to free herself.

The poor dog was stuck on the fence and was only freed when she was spotted by a passenger on a train that went past. The passenger notified railway workers at Garve station, who then freed the poor dog.

Jody was then taken to the vets in Conon Bridge, where she made a (more…)

Dog eats owners money, and then nature took its course

by Lianne Wilkinson on

Every dog owner has had the problem of their dog eating something of theirs, but it’s usually slippers or the newspaper. Imagine if your dog got hold of your cash, money you’d worked extra shifts for, and eaten that!

That’s exactly what happened to a woman in North Carolina, USA. She’d worked longer hours to save up some money, but made the mistake of leaving it in her bedroom, where her Swiss mountain dog was feeling hungry. The dog, Augie, found the $400 and ate every last cent of it!

His owner, Kelley Davis, realised her dog had eaten her money she took him for a walk and noticed parts of dollar bills being recognisable when he (more…)

Dog and duck go for a walk

by Darren Jamieson on March 18, 2009

If you’ve been to Bournemouth recently you might have seen a new local celebrity, a duck called Essy. Essy has become something of a celeb about town because she seems to think she’s a dog.

The duck’s owners, Steph and Tony Tufft, take the duck for walks with their two dogs, Staffordshire cross’ named Rachka and DD. The duck is so convinced that she’s a dog that she attempts to bark just like her friends, and even competes for dog treats with them.

The couple bought the duck from a farm at just eight weeks old; she’s now nine months old.

Tony proclaimed:

We are known throughout Charminster. People come out of bars to see her. They love it.

She doesn’t know she’s a duck. She must think she’s a (more…)

South Eastern Trains accused of flippant dog attack advert

by Lianne Wilkinson on

An advert by South Eastern Trains has been accused of being flippant because of the way it portrayed dogs attacking postal workers. The poster, which is displayed on trains and in train stations, is to advertise the fact that passengers can renew their season tickets by post.

The poster shows a postman being chased by a dog, which is of course all in good fun. However the Communication Workers Union has lambasted the poster, claiming that South Eastern Trains has acted irresponsibly. The Union recently launched a campaign against dog attacks on (more…)

A worldwide campaign to ban the international trading of animal fur, such as cat fur and dog fur, has begun with Sue Kedgley, member of the Green Party in New Zealand, drafting the bill. Animal welfare groups helped launch the bill in Auckland.

Sue Kedgley stated that the USA, Australia and the European Union had made moves to prohibit the importing of animal fur, which is used for stuffing, among other things.

Scent, smell and your puppy

by Vivien Richardson on

Puppies have a great sense of smell. Scenting is a very important attribute and it is a way of gathering information about the world, his new owners and other dogs.

A puppy’s world is a sensory one and it is a quick way of learning about the environment they live in and how to recognise other animals and people. This is done by scents they leave behind on the ground.

A Puppy will leave its own scent as a marking of territory by depositing (more…)

Dog saved from cliff fall by narrow ledge

by Lianne Wilkinson on March 16, 2009

They say that cats have nine lives, but some dogs are lucky as well. Buster the Labrador is certainly a lucky dog as he had a narrow escape after falling over a cliff face, which had a steep 200 ft drop. The cliff was located in Dorset, and is near the Man O’ War Bay.

The dog’s owner was relieved to see that Buster had landed on a narrow ledge just below the cliff top, instead of plummeting the 200 ft to the sea and rocks below. He rushed to a campsite in Durdle Door to ask for some rope to try and rescue his dog, which alerted (more…)
