Puppy nutrition

by Vivien Richardson on April 24, 2009

It is important for your puppy to have good nutrition to keep his or her body in good health and to grow into a strong, healthy adult dog. Nutrition for a puppy is quite different as once he is an adult, his nutritional needs will change.

Good nutrition will help your puppy to grow, his bones will become stronger and he will be full of energy to help him exercise and play every day.

Choosing your puppy food:

Choosing the correct food for your puppy’s diet can be confusing. If you are unsure, you should ask your veterinarian, food manufacturer or local pet store for help.

Tinned dog food has labels on it which has all the ingredients listed, including the amount of protein, wheat, corn and rice. The first ingredient on the label is the main ingredient and they will be listed in order of the amounts, so the lower down the list, the less of that ingredient in the food.

Guide dogs GPS unit nominated for award

by Lianne Wilkinson on

Guide dogs may be about to get their own satellite navigation system, invented by a mature student inventor to enable blind people to get to new places with their guide dog.

34 year old mature student from Penarth, Jason Perkins, was searching for an every day need for his design studies and having talked to blind people in Cardiff from the Cardiff Institute for the Blind, he found that guide dogs alone were not enough to give blind people the confident to travel to new places.

The guide dogs learn (more…)

Helmsley’s trustees reduce donation to dogs charities

by Lianne Wilkinson on April 23, 2009

On Tuesday this week, it was announced that $136 million of late New York property and hotel billionaire Leona Helmsley’s estated would be given to charity, but it was disappointing to hear that just $1 million will be distributed to dog-related charities that she preferred.

Helmsley died aged 87 in 2007 at her home in Connecticut, leaving instructions to the trustees of her estate that most of her multi-billions should go towards the care and welfare of dogs.  However, the will also gave the trustees discretion in distributing the funding.

A judge ruled that the trustees do have sole authority on how to distribute the money and although Helmsley had left her beloved white Maltese dog named Trouble $12 million, more than she had left to (more…)

Portuguese water dog saves owner from fire

by Darren Jamieson on April 22, 2009

water-dogThe Portuguese water dog breed has been receiving a lot of press of late due to the US President, Barack Obama, choosing one as his ‘first dog’. However, there are other Portuguese water dogs making the news as well as the one currently residing in the White House.

Cabrillo is one such dog, who received an award from the fire department in San Diego after he alerted his owner to a fire, which saved the life of his neighbour. The fire broke out on April 2nd while Cabrillo’s owner was asleep in bed. Cabrillo began to bark when he noticed that their next door neighbour’s house was on fire, waking his owner.

Thanks to Cabrillo, the fire department was able to act in time and extinguish the fire, saving the life of his neighbour.

Cabrillo received a box of dog treats for his actions (which he presumably didn’t eat all at once) and was made an honorary department fire dog.

Obama dog Bo was returned to his breeder

by Lianne Wilkinson on April 21, 2009

OBAMA-DOG/Did anybody wonder why the Portuguese water dog that the Obama family chose was six months old and not a younger puppy?  Bo was an unwanted, returned puppy; he was lucky though.  The breeder that bred Bo was a responsible breeder.

Being a responsible breeder means a lot more than just not over breeding your bitch and keeping your puppies until they are old enough.  All responsible breeders should ensure that anyone purchasing a puppy signs an agreement stating that they will return the puppy to the breeder if they do not want them later in life.

The Obama family were under a lot of pressure to (more…)

Socialising your puppy

by Vivien Richardson on April 20, 2009

A social life is important for you and your puppy and meeting different people will be a good experience for both of you. It is good for your puppy to meeting different sorts of people, such as noisy and quiet.

A puppy will not be shy from people who are different as they have a nosy nature but if they are not socialised properly and often they may grow to be insecure and shy.

Some puppies have no contact with children and can be a little shy and upset when they first meet children. This is because they do not understand the teasing and possessive behaviour children show to them. However, in a controlled environment they will happily accept children unless their behaviour to them is harmful or they perceive it as threatening.

Note that controlling a child’s behaviour towards a puppy is important. A puppy can be considered dangerous and blamed for a child’s naughtiness in the world we live in today.

Socialising means making new friends with (more…)

Marley & Me Review

by Darren Jamieson on

owenwilsonmarleyandmelu5If you’re a dog lover and a film lover, then this has been a great time to go to the movies, with an abundance of dog related films to get you in the mood to give your dog a big hug when you get home. The most successful of these movies was undoubtedly Marley & Me, starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston. As famous as they are however, it was the succession of golden retriever dogs that played Marley, from a puppy through to old age, who really stole the show.

The first thing that should be noted about Marley & Me is that it is not a feel good movie. It’s not one of those Benji style films that you can spend a Saturday afternoon watching and smile at the little doggie doing brave things and getting home at the end of the picture. Marley & Me is more of a gritty drama about relationships, the problems within them and how you balance a career with a family life.

Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston play John and Jennifer Grogan, a young newlywed couple who are just starting a life together. They’re both career focussed as professional writers, though Jennifer has a (more…)

by Lianne Wilkinson on April 19, 2009

britains_smallest_dogTilly could be Britain’s smallest dog.  She was born on 15th January and is a Chorkie, a cross between a Chihuahua and a Yorkshire terrier.  Tilly is now fully grown and stands just six inches tall and measures eight inches from nose to tail.

Tilly’s owner, Karen McPhearson of East Kilbride, said:

“Tilly is so boisterous and enthusiastic for someone so small.  We took her to the vets last week and we were told that she will not grow any more.  She has not got any bigger since she was four weeks old and now weighs just one pound four ounces and is just eight inches long and about eight inches tall from head to floor or six inches from her back to the floor.”

Earlier this month, there were (more…)
