Australian man needs rescuing from river trying to save his dog

by Lianne Wilkinson on April 17, 2009

irish-setterA dog owner in Australia jumped into the river to rescue his dog, an Irish setter, and then needed rescuing himself. Both the man and the dog had to be rescued by rescue teams.

The 45kg dog became stranded on a rock in the middle of a fast flowing river, in northeastern Australia. The river was below the wall of a dam, about 200 metres down. The dog’s owner, a twenty-two-year-old man, swam to rescue the dog, but he too became stranded.

Authorities were notified by the man’s wife, but they also deemed the river too treacherous to attempt a rescue, so sent food and blankets across so the pair could wait out the rising river. The man and his dog waited for (more…)

Dog brings home hand grenade from World War II

by Darren Jamieson on April 16, 2009

Most dog owners have found that their beloved dogs have brought home things they’d rather they didn’t. Usually these extend to dirty looking bones, the occasional pigeon and in rare cases, a squirrel (if your dog is fast enough to catch one).

A family in Inverness-shire found that their dog brought home something a little more unexpected, and unwanted. The collie puppy brought a WWII hand grenade home, and dangled it from her mouth, holding it by the pin.

The dangerous dog’s owner, Mylene MacDonald, stated:

Only rust and mud were keeping the pin in place.

Had it worked loose hanging from Rox’s mouth, she and my two wee boys could have been (more…)

by Lianne Wilkinson on April 14, 2009

portuguese_water_dog_boThe Portuguese water dog is certain to be the most talked about dog breed for some time now, thanks to US President Barack Obama.

Nobody could accuse the President of rushing into purchasing the first dog the family thought of as the topic of who and which breed would be the ‘first dog’ of America has been talked about since late last year and Obama’s family were even offered the Hairless Peruvian from Peru as a gift.

Honda unveil car with dog bed in the boot

by Darren Jamieson on

Honda with dog bedThe Americans are well known for their love of dogs, and the Japanese are well known for their love of exploiting the Americans’ love of pretty much anything if they can make money from it. Therefore, car manufacturer Honda has come up with a new model that is aimed at America’s army of dog lovers. The new Honda model has a dog bed in the boot, a fitted dog water bowl and even a ramp to help smaller dogs, or not so agile dogs, enter the car easily.

Honda unveiled the new dog friendly car at the New York motor show, with the help of Sammy, a rescue dog. The dog friendly car is (more…)

Exercising your puppy

by Vivien Richardson on April 13, 2009

puppy_on_leadWalking, running and exercising your puppy will become a daily pleasure for both of you. However, it is essential that the basics of training and discipline are started from an early age and this should be included daily.

If you have bought your puppy from a private dog breeder who breeds their puppies in their own home, it is likely that toilet training will have already been started by placing the puppy on a newspaper after meals.  Don’t expect this to automatically continue in your own home though because the puppy will be in a strange new environment.

A training programme is made easier if commands are given in a firm tone otherwise the command is likely to be ignored. A puppy will try to get away with ignoring a command and (more…)

Slug parasite a danger for dogs

by Darren Jamieson on April 12, 2009

dog_and_slugLungworm: Hundreds of dogs are likely to suffer this summer thanks to a parasite that lives on slugs, the slimy pest that many households would prefer to be rid of.

A vet in Southend, Gareth Richardson, has been in the media this week warning dog owners about how dangerous it could be if their dogs deliberately or accidentally eat snails or slugs, thanks to a lungworm infection carried by the pests that can be potentially fatal if (more…)

Make it a Happy Easter for dogs

by Lianne Wilkinson on

happy_easter_dogsWishing a Happy Easter to all our readers and their dogs today!  No doubt there will be children and adults alike all over the nation chomping their way through plenty of chocolate today and although we certainly don’t want to spoil anyone’s fun, don’t forget the threat that human chocolate causes harm to our beloved dogs.

This year, we’ve already seen one dog almost die from chocolate and we don’t want to see any more.  Even if you know chocolate isn’t good for dogs, make sure your children and any visitors you have know it too.  Keep the human chocolate strictly separate from the doggie chocolate.

So have fun and we hope you remembered to treat your dog too, I know my dog has had her eye on her doggie Easter Egg all week…
