Credit crunch causes RSPCA to turn away dogs

One animal shelter in Derby has been forced to announced it will no longer be able to care of or accept dogs due to a financial crisis.

The Abbey Street RSPCA centre in Derby costs £5,500 per week to run and the managers have said that as a result they can now only take in or care for cats and other small animals.  This means any dogs already (more…)

Basset hounds and corgis share same ancestor

An article in the Telegraph stated the study is due to be published in the journal Science where scientists studied DNA from 835 dogs, 95 of which had short legs.

This new scientific discovery gives clues about the basic of evolution and how species have different physical attributes. It is hope it may even lead to new discoveries and understanding of diseases such as cancer and human dwarfism.

Dog wheelchair gives new lease of life

Rio lives in New Zealand and her two back legs were paralysed just three months ago following a complication during an operation on a compressed disc in her back, but thanks to her owners, she now has a set of wheels to keep her going.  According to Rio’s vet, Alan Probert, this is (more…)

Dog adopts red panda cubs

One article in the Independent of Ireland and The Times today will have been sure to get dog lovers cooing and aahing, as they published pictures of a mongrel dog adopting two red panda cubs in northern China.

How to introduce your puppy to your cat

If you have a cat, when you bring your puppy home it is important you properly introduce him or her to your cat:

Place your puppy on the floor. Do not leave them alone to get to know each other as that could be dangerous for both puppy and cat.

Put your puppy into a crate for a short time as this will allow the cat to eye him up and down at a safe distance without the cat feeling threatened.

If the puppy is used to a lead, try placing a lead on your puppy and walking him around the room while your cat is in the room, making sure your cat has a high place it can retreat to (more…)
