Spaniel falls off cliff – TWICE

by Darren Jamieson on August 13, 2009

The Mirror is calling Buddy, a five year old spaniel, the luckiest dog alive having fallen off a 100 foot high cliff twice – but falling off a 100 foot high cliff twice sounds pretty unlucky to me.

Having fallen off the cliff twice, the poor dog then had to spend two hours doggie paddling in the sea before he was hauled onto a yacht a mile out.  Amazingly, the yacht owners also have a dog called Buddy and gave the spaniel a lift back to the shore.

Poor Buddy first fell off the cliff as (more…)

Why you should groom your dog regularly

by Vivien Richardson on August 12, 2009

Groom-a-DogVeterinary surgeons are often asked why we have to groom our dogs when animals in the wild are not groomed by humans.

The answer to that question is that wild animals are looked after by Mother Nature. Animals in the wild have a different lifestyle and are affected by the weather in a different way to a domesticated pet.

Natural terrain helps animals to wear down their toe nails. The torrential rain experienced in the wild also removes and combs out the dead hair of animals as they move through the undergrowth.

Wild animals use nature’s diet and have plenty of (more…)

Dogs could be more intelligent than two year olds

by Lianne Wilkinson on August 11, 2009

Looking at your dog, you might be forgiven for thinking they think of nothing more than eating, sleeping and walkies, but apparently they can also understand certain words and even basic maths according to scientists.

The scientists also said that some dogs are as bright as the average two year old and can comprehend around 250 words or gestures and even do simple maths or count to five.

Of course, not all breeds (more…)

Happy birthday for world’s oldest dog at 26

by Darren Jamieson on August 10, 2009

worldsoldestdogIf you were to hazard a guess at the age of the world’s oldest dog, it is likely you might guess at early 20′s and indeed, until recently it was thought that the world’s oldest dog at the moment was a 21 year old daschund-cross living in New York but that title has been challenged by the owner of Max, a terrier-cross who celebrates his 26th birthday today.

How to train your puppy to ‘sit’

by Vivien Richardson on August 9, 2009

When your puppy has settled in his new home and is familiar with your tone of voice, it is time to start training him to the basic command of ‘sit’.

Getting your puppy to sit when family or a visitor is welcomed into your home is pretty impressive.  However puppy training does require a little bit of patience on your behalf.

Kneel down near your puppy and hold a treat in your hand between your fingers (more…)

German shepherd breeding clubs targeted by Kennel Club

by Lianne Wilkinson on August 8, 2009

german_shepherdIt seems a long time ago since the BBC broadcast the Pedigree Dogs Exposed documentary but the reaches of that programme and the waves it caused have been continuing.

The Kennel Club came under much fire, whether rightly or wrongly (we have debated this in an earlier article Pedigree Dogs Exposed: The Aftermath), but it seems they have seen fit to change their ways and in their words, speed already-planned activities up with the now (more…)

Origins of the domesticated dog challenged

by Lianne Wilkinson on August 7, 2009

It seems over the last twelve months that there has been much talk about the origin of dogs and the origin of their domestication too.  This week, the thought that the domestic dog as we know it originated from East Asia has been challenged.

In the past, it has been the wide range of genetic diversity in dogs from East Asia that has led experts to believe that domestication started there, however the research published in PNAS concludes that the DNA from the dogs in the villages of Africa is just as diverse, so although dogs may indeed have originated from East Asia there is insufficient evidence to support that conclusion. Missing dog found after nine years

by Darren Jamieson on August 6, 2009

Muffy_missingdogNo matter how much you love your dog, you may be forgiven for giving up on your missing best friend after nine years.  Imagine then how surprised a family in Australia were to find their missing dog Muffy nine years after she went missing and almost 1,200 miles from their home.

Muffy, pictured here courtesy of the Independent, was found sleeping on cardboard in the backyward of a house in the city of Melbourne, 1,200 miles from her (more…)

Should we stop using sniffer dogs?

by Lianne Wilkinson on August 5, 2009

In the media this week, the director of drugs charity Release, Sebastian Saville aged 56, is reportedly suing the police after he was searched on the London Underground as a sniffer dog barked at him.

It happened in June last year in the Camden Town underground station and Saville claims his human rights were breached because they searched him and found nothing.  Saville claims sniffer dogs are ineffective and wrong four out of five times, so police should not be allowed to stop and search people just on the dog’s say-so as that is not sufficiently ‘probable cause’.  So, does he want the (more…)
