Should all dogs be microchipped?

by Lianne Wilkinson on September 9, 2009

A recent study from the Dogs Trust has revealed that the number of stray dogs in this country has had the largest increase year-on-year since the records first started.

In the one year period to March 2009, the figures on the 2009 Stray Dogs Report showed 107,228 stray dogs were found.  This is an increase of 11 percent on the previous twelve month period.

An increase in abandoned dogs should be no surprise to many as this website has itself reported that more and more people are abandoning their dogs during the recession as they look to cut costs.

The Dogs Trust attributed the rise in part to the recession but also to (more…)

Take your dog to a Pilates class

by Darren Jamieson on September 8, 2009

Our dogs have clothes and accessories, shampoos and massages, and even their own beer, but now it seems they have their own fitness regime as Pilates classes for the dog in your life was launched in Chicago earlier this month.

Fitness fanatic Andrea Metcalf is a real Pilates lover and so when she acquired an English bulldog called Wrigley, perhaps it was only natural that she wanted to work out with him.  For most people, we just take the dog for a walk but no, Metcalf wanted more than that and found a way to get Wrigley into her Pilates (more…)

Kennel Club drops Accredited breeder

by Darren Jamieson on September 7, 2009

kennel-club-puppy-farm-01A former KC Accredited Breeder has been dropped from the scheme after a DNA analysis apparently proved that her Cocker Spaniel had given birth to four litters of puppies without having even a single season’s break between litters, according to the Kennel Club.

Following criticism of the Kennel Club for not being sufficiently vigilant and strict with dog breeders, it has become clear that even the terms of their Accredited Breeder Scheme (ABS) are insufficient to monitor breeders.

The breeder in question, Miss Marrison of Tapsanav Cockers was not only a member of the Kennel Club’s Accredited Breeder Scheme but also registered as a breeder with her local council, Eastleigh Borough Council.

This reported over-breeding only (more…)

How to bring up a puppy

by Vivien Richardson on September 5, 2009

You have brought this high level energetic bundle of fun home and within a couple of hours he or she is starting to settle in and is in charge of any adults or children in the family home.

One thing to remember, what you let them get away with now they will think they can get away in the future. Ignoring the rules just because your puppy is cute can be a disaster.

Vaccinating your puppy

by Vivien Richardson on September 4, 2009

It is essential for your puppy to have his full course of injections for more reasons than you might think. As an owner and friend to your puppy you will need to take extra care in the first few months of your puppy’s life.

Vaccinations protect your puppy from canine diseases as they are especially vulnerable in contacting canine infections.

Some of the infections your puppy could pick up are hepatitis distemper virus and leptospirosis, which is common in rats and transferable to humans so vaccinations protect humans too.

The procedure for your puppy’s injections is one injection between the ages of six to eight weeks and a second injection at ten weeks old. There must be a four week gap between injections.

Vaccinations are also important for dog insurance.  Dog insurance companies will not (more…)

What do puppy’s facial expressions mean?

by Vivien Richardson on September 2, 2009

Your puppy has a range of facial expressions to indicate his or her mood just like a child.

When your puppy is happy he will have his mouth slightly open and a little bit of his tongue will show.

If he is being curious to what is going on around him he will probably close his mouth, cock his head to one side and his ears will prick up. He is concentrating on what he is interested in.

If your dog is sitting or stood upright with his ears pricked up, mouth shut and not moving a muscle then he is listening intently to the noises around him (more…)
