Come and have a dog if you think you’re hard enough

by Lianne Wilkinson on October 21, 2009

Some dog breeds have, it seems, been harshly branded as ‘hard dogs’ by the media and are finding that image difficult to shake off, even when the reality is far from the truth. The real problem seems to be when irresponsible dog owners are looking for what they consider ‘tough breeds’ to act as guard dogs and to replace some element of their manhood that is missing from their lives.

Staffordshire Bull TerrierStaffordshire bull terriers are one such dog breed that has been singled out by dog owners looking for fierce dogs, yet all too often finding that the dogs themselves are meek, mild and playful – far from their portrayed media image. This results in the poor dogs being abandoned by their owners for no being ‘hard enough’.

The problem is particularly rife in Scotland as SPCA workers in Edinburgh have taken in record numbers of Staffordshire bull terriers that have been abandoned by their foolish owners.

The Balerno centre reports that out of the current dogs it has looking for new homes, 80% of them are Staffordshire bull terriers or cross breeds with Staffs. Equally, Seafield’s Dog and Cat Home in Edinburgh states that out of the dogs it has on its books, (more…)

Dog sells paintings for more than one thousand pounds each!

by Darren Jamieson on October 20, 2009

Sam the dog artistWe all think that our dogs are special, extremely talented and one in a million. Dog owner Mary Stadelbacher can hold extra claim to that belief as her dog, Sam, isn’t just her adorable family pet, he’s a successful artist in his own right. Sam, the dog, paints his works of art by holding his paintbrush in his mouth and letting his muse inspire him.

Sam has 22 different works of art in his collection, and has sold many of them for over £1,000 each.

Obviously, Sam is in the USA, Maryland to be precise.

His owner, Mary Stadelbacher, is one of his biggest fans and she enthused about his work:

Sam is a regular renaissance dog and his abstract paintings are all the rage with the hip New York galleries.

He loves his painting and would happily (more…)

Experimental therapy for dogs could help understand human cancer

by Lianne Wilkinson on October 17, 2009

According to a team of scientists with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), studying dogs suffering from cancer could provide some valuable insights into diagnosis and treatment of human cancer.

The team is led by Chand Khanna and believes that studying the effects of new cancer therapies in clinical trials held using dogs might help understand human cancer because the cancer tumours in our best friends have similar biological and clinical similarities to our own tumours.

Whether or not a dog owner decides to allow an experimental therapy on their own dog is reportedly influenced by the reduced cost for care given (more…)

Dog bans risk animal welfare

by Lianne Wilkinson on October 14, 2009

According to a BBC report, the Kennel Club (KC) has warned that there are too many councils across England and Wales that are either forcing owners to keep their dogs on a lead or banning them altogether from public places like beaches, parks and even open fields.  The KC says this could have an impact on animal welfare.

In their defence, the Local Government Association (LGA) confirmed that yes, more councils are using dog control orders but this is in response to demand from the public, particularly parents.

The KC has raised (more…)

by Vivien Richardson on October 12, 2009

dog and cakeWhen you choose your puppy he will have a stomach full of his mother’s milk with a small amount of solid puppy food giving him a feeling of contentment.

Feeding a puppy the correct amount of food once he is home with you can be a challenge, but unless you want your dog to grow up overweight, you need to learn the difference between feeding your puppy enough so he can grow big and strong and feeding him too much of the wrong food so he becomes fat or obese – it can’t be his birthday every day!
