On the 11th February 2011, Wookie the Pomeranian dog will have his chance to steal the limelight, as he shows dog lovers the newly designed dog leads created by Promofix owner, Kathryn Holloway. Wookie is the pet dog of Kathryn who lives in Bridgnorth, Shropshire. Kathryn has recently been asked by show organisers if she would assist them with the promotion of an event in the near future.

With Promofix being a relatively successful company specialising in promotional merchandising, it is clear to see why Miss. Holloway has been chosen to help with the event. Despite the fact that her pet Pomeranian did not manage to gain a win in his section at the championship event, he gained a rosette. It was this that influenced Kathryn to design and build some personalised dog leads, so that other runner-up competitors could still gain something from their efforts.

A Top Dog competition will be taking place shortly in the summer months around Telford and the Shropshire area. Organisers of the competition will benefit from Kathryn’s dog leads as the leads will promote particular societies working with dogs. As Kathryn attends the events Wookie, her Pomeranian pet, will accompany her. Although the leads will be given to the qualifiers at the Top Dog competition, Wookie will surely be the first canine to try out the dog leads.

The effort Kathryn has put into creating the dog leads for the purpose of being a gift to competitors in the competition has been greatly acknowledged. Kathryn, owner of Promofix, said:

‘’Wookie had a wonderful time mixing with the many other breeds at the show and I am pleased to have created a special item for the Shrop-Dog Finals.”

This may be the beginning for Wookie the Pomeranian’s adventures of attending a number of dog-based events.

An animal rescue organisation has been overwhelmed by the number of small dogs it has taken in over the past 12 months.

The Blue Cross animal welfare charity has said that the levels of abandoned shih tzus, chihuahuas and bichon frises have tripled, and thinks that the trend for the dogs popularised by the likes of Paris Hilton may be to blame.

Many dog owners look to emulate the heiress and her chihuahua Tinkerbelle, or Coleen Rooney and bichon frise Daisy, by carrying the pint sized pet around in a designer handbag.

However, many underestimate the care and attention needed to be given to their pets to ensure that they are healthy and well adjusted, and find that they are hopelessly ill equipped to look after them. As such, the charity has been left to find new owners for hundreds of unwanted dogs.

The task has been a struggle – many of the pampered pooches have been mollycoddled to the point of refusing to walk anywhere, and have to be carried. Some of them have even been noted to become aggressive if they witness affection being given to another dog and not themselves.

Lara Alford, who manages the charity which is based in Southampton, says that many of the dogs were bought as a fashion accessory rather than as a companion. She said:

“Although people think they look great when they see someone famous with one, they often don’t realise what a responsibility they are taking on. People think these little dogs do not need the same amount of exercise and attention as bigger ones but this is not the case.”

“If they are mollycoddled and do not get the stimulation they need, it can result in behavioural problems.”

She recounts how one pomeranian named Britney was terrified of her lead, and played dead in order to avoid walking. The new owner had to pick her up and carry her back home.

The dogs, which cost upwards of £1,000 before dog food and veterinarian bills, represent a substantial financial loss for these unprepared dog owners.

One of the world’s most popular dogs is to get a book deal documenting life as he knows it, or as his owners know it, presumably.

Boo, the Pomeranian, is well known amongst friends and followers on social media sites such as Facebook and YouTube. The loveable Pomeranian has over 1.1 million followers on its Facebook Page and some of the YouTube videos have racked up almost 800,000 views each. The dog has become so popular that T-shirts and many more items of merchandise are widely available on the internet promoting his accomplishments.

However, the dog’s mission for international stardom is not stopping there. Now an announcement has been made that there is going to be a book released titled “Boo the Life of the World’s Cutest Dog, is about being a little dog in a big world.” Chronicle books said.

Jennifer Kong, who wrote the review, also added “I discovered Boo after a friend posted the below picture on Facebook. I was instantly enamoured. When I pitched the idea of a Boo book to our publishing group, everyone got really excited. At the time Boo had 60,000 fans, and we knew he was on the verge of blowing up.”

The book, written by his owner J.H Lee, is filled with photos documenting the lifestyle that the dog leads. Fans of the cute canine are able to start pre-ordering their copies of the book, which is due to be released sometime in the summer.

The book goes on sale for a total of $12.95 and will be available to purchase on the 20th July.

Continuing our week long list of lists, today we turn the spotlight on singers.

It’s funny old life being a rock star or a member of a band. When you’re not holed up in a studio, recording your 152nd take on a backing vocal because you still can’t get it right, filming a reality TV series about your dysfunctional kerr-azy family or twitching in a gutter outside a nightclub after overdoing the Columbian marching powder, you’re more than likely you’re on tour, spending months away from your home and family.

This hardly seems like the behaviour of a conscientious dog owner. We all know that your pet needs love and attention, not to mention feeding, watering and exercise. Luckily for the average rock multi millionaire, he’ll have hired help on hand to assist with the day to day care of his pet, whether it’s an elderly English retainer or a young Filipino manservant. This leaves you free to pose with your pooch for photographs for Hello’s exclusive 8 page spread of your brand new Hampshire mansion.

Of course, this is a sweeping generalisation. In a profession where image is everything, sycophancy abounds, teen idols have a shelf life measurable in weeks and talented people never seem to get the success you think they deserve; the unquestioning loyalty and friendship that your dog will give you can be beyond compare. Let’s have a gander at some of the more famous warblers who have a pet dog.

Robbie Williams

Not long back in the UK after his American UFO hunting jaunt, the one time Take That bad boy and now new Take That bad boy owns several dogs. Due to quarantine laws, he had to leave his pets in Los Angeles for six months when he moved back to Blighty, but this didn’t stop him from spending time with his Labrador/Pitbull cross, German Shepherd, Bull Mastiff, Rottweiler and a wolf called Sid. He shelled out £4,000 per month on first class, 11 hour flights to see his pets. The dogs were eventually allowed into the UK as they were free of rabies, but the jury is still out on Robbie.

Girls Aloud

The girl band is famous for loving dogs, and went to the aid of the Dogs Trust as part of Nintendo’s puppy simulator Nintendogs. Band member Sarah Harding is so attached to Corker, her French bulldog, that she asked the rest of the group if she could have a dog crèche on tour as she couldn’t bear to be apart from him.

Jon Bon Jovi

The rocker who, with breathtaking modesty, named his band after himself, is consistently named as one of the world’s most beautiful people. Once the epitome of American stadium rock, he single-handedly propped up the global hairspray industry during the Eighties. However, beneath the twinkly-eyed, double-denimed cowboy image beats the heart of a big softy; his Rottweiler/Shepherd cross Copper was rescued from the dog pound after Bon Jovi couldn’t bear to see him locked up.

Shania Twain

The Canadian singer, whose real name is Eileen Edwards, loves dogs so much she even married a guy called ‘Mutt’. She currently owns two brown Newfoundlands called Coal and Mocha. A devout vegetarian, she has been reported not to feed her dogs meat, and her previously pet Tim, a German Shepherd, even had his own dog flap on her tour bus!

Ozzy Osbourne

The mental Brummie singer, who once cocked his leg on the Alamo war memorial whilst wearing his wife’s dress, has an amazing 18 pet dogs. His talent show judge wife Sharon is rarely seen without her Pomeranian Minnie, and Ozzy’s bulldog stole the show on his reality show by pooping wherever and whenever it could. In 2009, Ozzy’s Pomeranian Little Bit was taken by a coyote whilst the family watched the Michael Jackson memorial show. So far, Ozzy has restrained himself from biting the heads off any of his pets.

Keep your peepers peeled for tomorrow’s top five list…

Ozzy Osbourne lost one of his pet Pomeranians to a coyote this week in the grounds of his mansion in Los Angeles.

The Pomeranian was called Little Bit, and was attacked on Tuesday. Reportedly, Ozzy Osbourne and wife Sharon Osbourne were watching the Michael Jackson memorial on television so did not hear the attack taking place.

On Twitter, Kelly Osbourne said that her father Ozzy:

“is devastated – she was his other woman”

Animal lovers may recall that in the late 70s, Ozzy Osbourne made the headlines as he was physically removed from a record company’s offices when he bit the head off a live dove to get their attention. He is also known for, in 1982, having bitten the head off a bat that he stated he believed was ‘just rubber’ when he performed in Iowa.

Ozzy has also previously admitted that whilst he was highly addicted to drugs, he shot the family’s cats, saying:

“I was taking drugs so much I was a wreck. The final straw came when I shot all our cats. We had about 17, and I went crazy and shot them all.”

Ozzy and wife Sharon have eighteen dogs at their mansion. Sharon Osbourne is known for her love of animals and is a regular visitors to the LA stray dogs home, often giving homeless dogs a home in her mansion.

The Department of Animal Services in LA have issued guides for dog owners in Los Angeles to help them guard against coyote attacked, issuing a statement saying:

“Wild animals are opportunistic, and coyotes fit this mould very well”

This is not the first time the Osbournes dogs have faced trouble from coyotes. Back in 2003, Ozzy rescued one of their Pomeranians, Pipi, from a coyote and previously, their black Chihuahua, Lulu, was killed in an attack by a coyote.

Surely by now, you would have thought they’d have learnt their lesson and kept their dogs safely under watch?

It is well known how much Sharon and Ozzy love their dogs, and many will remember the story of how Sharon was looked after by her white Pomeranian Minnie whilst she was ill with cancer, but perhaps they have too many dogs to look after them properly.
