Essential vaccinations for puppies and adult dogs

by Vivien Richardson on June 1, 2010

Most veterinary surgeons follow their own regime with regards vaccinations for puppies and dogs. Each one will agree that it is essential that a dog has to have a starter set of vaccinations at the puppy stage, followed by a booster each year for the rest of their lives.

The vaccinations given to dogs are based on their professional knowledge and training. Some of the vets that have lived in specific areas for a long time have more knowledge of local diseases that could affect dogs in their area.

A simple task of taking a puppy, or dog, to the vet will save the dog’s life, however it should be noted that some dogs, but not many, can have an allergic reaction. The immediate symptoms of having a reaction to an injection are that your (more…)

Do you have insurance for your dog?

by Vivien Richardson on May 11, 2010

dog with broken legMost people have insurance for their homes, their property and their cars, as insurance is just one of those things that we take for granted as something that we need, and hopefully will never have to use. However, how many people have taken out a pet health insurance policy on their dog?

Unless you have an expensive pedigree dog who could be a possible target for theft, there’s a good chance that you haven’t considered dog insurance – but without it your loving pet could prove very expensive indeed. Health insurance for dogs covers any unexpected, and often expensive, trips to the vets that your dog may require. Without pet health insurance you could (more…)

Losing your dog can be a frightful experience, and whether you have dog insurance or some sort of policy where you can notify people, there are still a few things you can do straight away to increase your chances of finding your dog.

First of all, stay in the same place or if you have to leave, then be sure to leave a piece of clothing or something with your scent on.

Should all dogs be microchipped?

by Lianne Wilkinson on September 9, 2009

A recent study from the Dogs Trust has revealed that the number of stray dogs in this country has had the largest increase year-on-year since the records first started.

In the one year period to March 2009, the figures on the 2009 Stray Dogs Report showed 107,228 stray dogs were found.  This is an increase of 11 percent on the previous twelve month period.

Vaccinating your puppy

by Vivien Richardson on September 4, 2009

It is essential for your puppy to have his full course of injections for more reasons than you might think. As an owner and friend to your puppy you will need to take extra care in the first few months of your puppy’s life.

Some of the infections your puppy could pick up are hepatitis distemper virus and leptospirosis, which is common in rats and transferable to humans so vaccinations protect humans too.

The procedure for your puppy’s injections is one injection between the ages of six to eight weeks and a second injection at ten weeks old. There must be a four week gap between injections.

Vaccinations are also important for dog insurance.  Dog insurance companies will not (more…)
