Four legged Corrie character films tearful final scenes

by Mark James on October 7, 2011

British soap operas have a long tradition of featuring dogs that become national Treasures, and the star of the biggest soap ever is set to step down.

Great Dane Schmeichal, who has a shiny wet nose pretty much like his Manchester United namesake, is set to bid farewell to the cobbles of ongoing pie-and-mushy-peas saga Coronation Street.

The character has been the best friend of Chesney, as played by Sam Aston, since 2003, and has actually been portrayed by four separate dogs, all kept by dog breeders Clive and Anne Lunt. With 40 years’ experience in stud dogs and show dogs, at one point they owned a dozen of the massive pets. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Mrs Lunt recounted how (more…)

Nestle ad appeals directly to your dog

by Leanne Thompson on October 6, 2011

Nestle, the biggest food company on the planet, has unveiled a new ad which is directly targeted at dogs.

In a break from making ads featuring a cherubic blonde kid, dressed as a cowboy and being free and easy with his Milky Bars, the advertisement looks to attract the attention of dogs with a mixture of sounds, some of which may already be familiar to your pet.

As is the way of advertising, the ad looks to attract the attention of humans as well. In a statement issued by Nestle Purina, it says:

“Nestle Purina has created the first-ever television commercial especially for dogs.”

“The TV commercial to be screened on Austrian television uses different sounds — including a high frequency tone — to capture the attention of four-legged friends and their owners.”

The ad will feature a ‘squeak’ designed to sound like many dogs toys that are on the market. A high pitched pinging sound will also be emitted, along with a (more…)

by Mark James on September 15, 2011

In early 2011, Louise Harris spent £20,000 on a wedding for Lola, one of her Yorkshire terriers, who got hitched to Chinese crested Mugly, the owner of the Britain’s Ugliest Dog crown since 2005.

After years of misplaced affection, she has now found a beau of her own – Dan Hill, presenter of TV show The New Reclaimers.

After meeting Dan at a fashion show, the two became smitten. In fact, Louise brought him to heel in record time. Although they have only been together for little over three months, she now dresses Dan in identical (more…)

Come by! TV institution set for return

by Mark James on September 14, 2011

Sunday nights were never the same without One Man and His Dog. Marvelling at how well trained the collies were, wondering how the shepherd made those piercing whistling noises and trembling in anticipation at whether or not the sheep would finally enter the pen were a staple for many.

However, after a period away from our screens, sheepdog trials are due for a return to our screens, albeit with a few new twists.

The World Sheepdog Trials, due to air on More 4 this Thursday 15th September, will feature heartrate monitors attached to the sheep to indicate how nervous they are, and therefore how likely they will be to make a run for it, accelerometers on the dogs’ collars to record how fast they (more…)

by Leanne Thompson on August 27, 2011

As if it wasn’t bad enough that we Brits were turning into a nation of goggle box addicts, it seems that our pet dogs are also developing square eyes.

A new study has suggested that the average dog in the UK will spend 50 minutes a day staring at the chattering cyclops that dwells within our living rooms.

The Daily Mail reports that the study names Eastenders as the favourite show amongst dogs, with Philip Schofield coming up trumps as their favourite personality on screen. Poodle-haired motoring pundit Jeremy Clarkson came in (more…)
