John Lewis pulls the plug on Christmas dog ad

by Mark Glenning on December 15, 2010

John_LewisAs well as being the season where everybody is required to display jollity to some degree, December also brings a slew of TV campaigns for big name high street chains, but this year, an advert by John Lewis has provoked the ire of dog lovers.

The ad in question depicts an Irish Wolfhound sat forlornly amid a blizzard of snow, whilst a young boy hangs a stocking over his dog kennel. The child then retreats to the warmth of his house whilst his pet looks on dejectedly.

However, even though the snow was fake and it was an advert, campaigners for animal welfare were outraged, and claimed that John Lewis were sending out the wrong message about caring for animals (more…)

Andrex flushes puppy down the toilet

by Mark Glenning on December 3, 2010

Andrex’s cute-as-a-button Labrador puppy, which has been at the forefront of their advertising campaign since 1972, has been abandoned in favour of a computer generated alternative.

In a 40 seconds long commercial which aired for the first time Wednesday night the best kept secret for several months at advertising firm JWT, the brains behind the original campaign, was unveiled.

As if this wasn’t enough for fans of the pup to stomach, he was joined by a brace of friends – a Dalmation and a British Bulldog – in his new virtual puppy world. They were shown eating, playing and sleeping together as a voiceover pointed out that (more…)

by Lianne Wilkinson on November 9, 2010

Perennial socialite Paris Hilton, known for her fashionable handbag dogs, has hit the doggie headlines once again this week with news that she has a new dog – and yes, it’s another breed that will fit nicely into her purse.

Paris was spotted out and about in Los Angeles by the Daily Mail, carrying her new puppy in a handbag that matched her outfit. Paris was shopping in LA for new pet supplies, and she’ll be in need of some dog food and other supplies after admitting recently to owning (more…)

50 Cent threatens his dog with a knife on Twitter

by Lianne Wilkinson on September 22, 2010

Rappers are known for their dogs, but usually a rapper’s dog is a big, powerful breed to enforce their masculinity, such as a Pitbull or Rottweiler. US rapper 50 Cent however likes a friendlier breed of dog, one he can turn his back on and not wonder if it’s going to ‘stick him’ – his dog however has no such assurances judging by the recent photo Fiddy uploaded to his Twitter account.

Top 5 films about dogs

by Mark Glenning on September 17, 2010

Broadly speaking, dogs seem to have a bit of a raw deal in films today. They seem to fall into two categories: direct to video fluff similar to Air Buddies, which stars a quintet of golden retriever pups so cute they make you want to puke, or slavering zombie horrors trying to sink their teeth into Milla Jovovich in films like Resident Evil. It’s a far cry from the fame and respect accorded to canine De Niros such as Rin Tin Tin and Lassie.

Many canine film stars owe their careers to Strongheart, a German shepherd who was one of the earliest animal actors. After being trained to be a police dog whilst in Germany, he was brought over to the States by married filmmakers Laurence Trimble and Jane Murfin, who had some experience with canine actors. Strongheart made several popular films, such as White Fang (1925), and did much to popularise the breed in America – his lineage survives even now.

Although many of his films are now lost, he paved the way for many four-legged thesps, which we at Dream Dogs now salute. Bear in mind that we’re only considering the stars of the show, and not side characters; if that were the case, Jed, the wolf/husky cross who stars in John Carpenter’s The Thing, would be first in line for a doggy Oscar.

Starring Rin Tin Tin, this was a serial that spanned a dozen episodes. The plot is a little thin – the furtive Wolf Man is terrorising a small western town, and apple cheeked Jimmy Carter teams up with (more…)

Drew Barrymore mourns passing of dog Flossie

by Lianne Wilkinson on August 27, 2010

Drew Barrymore, who appeared recently in our list of the top 5 actresses who own dogs, is mourning the passing of her dog Flossie. Flossie wasn’t just any ordinary dog, as she once saved Drew’s life 12 years ago, in 1998, when she awoke the household and alerted them to a fire.

drew-barrymore-flossieFlossie, a cross between a Labrador and a Chow, saved both Drew Barrymore and her then husband Tom Green as they slept through a fire in their home in Beverly Hills. The dog sadly passed away in July – aged 16 – and Drew honoured her lifelong pal by spreading her ashes on the Ganges in India, during a recent trip.

Now that Flossie has passed away, Drew has a new puppy that she is training. While speaking on a recent interview on the David Letterman show, Drew revealed a (more…)

Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore Review

by Darren Jamieson on August 26, 2010

With still a week or so to go on our Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore competition, where you can win £20 worth of UK cinema vouchers, we thought we’d turn our attentions to the film itself.

The first Cats and Dogs film, released in 2001, was a triumph for special effects in the way it merged live action with CGI. While the film may not have set cinema box-offices alight, it did prove to us something we’ve known for many years; cats are evil, dogs are the good guys.

As the first film wasn’t a runaway success it is perhaps surprising that Warner Brothers decided to make a sequel, and even more surprising that they waited nine years for it when the only people who would have really enjoyed the original will now be more into The Expendables, than Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore.

But make a sequel they did, and reading some of the reviews online you’d think they’d made an (more…)
