Little Mix may be the hot favourites but the race for Christmas number one may not be over yet with a popular YouTube video being turned into a remix hit.

The YouTube clip of a dog owner frantically chasing after his dog Fenton across Richmond Park has been remixed by The Hoxtons, a progressive house duo, and may be heading to the much-desired number one spot this Christmas.

The single, “Benton! Jesus Christ!” which features Fenton Against The Machine, is released in the same week as Little Mix’ X-Factor single.

In another attempt to stop X-Factor getting to number one, a campaign on Facebook has been set up to try “to annoy Simon Cowell and try to save the UK from an X Factor Christmas number 1”.

The Facebook page also states:

“If there’s one man who can take on Simon Cowell and win, it’s a dog, and that dog is called BENTON (or possibly Fenton).”

Pitch & Sync has produced the song and it will be out in the shops on Monday December 18 and can be bought from iTunes and Amazon, and viewed on YouTube (naturally).

The Hoxtons say that all proceeds from the single’s sales will be going to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

Fenton, the black Labrador, became a huge online hit after being caught on film chasing a herd of deer across Richmond Park.

“Jesus Chris! Benton!” quickly became a massive catchphrase as the desperate owner was seen chasing his unruly pet across the park, shouting after him.

The humorous clip shot to fame on YouTube after it was viewed more than 2.7 million times and has already seen numerous spoof clips appear on the site.

A short YouTube video has now been viewed more than 700,000 times since being posted on the site last week.

Ali Goodyear, 37-years-old, had taken his animal loving 13-year old son to Richmond Park in London for a day out. They set about filming some deer in the park and ended up getting some fantastic footage of a different kind.

Their video pictures a man running after his dog, Fenton, who has managed to get away from his owner and is seen chasing a huge group of deer.

The owner is heard in the video screaming for his dog and trying to catch up with him after he makes a dash for the herd. The owner sounds to be shouting “Benton”, which is what many of the YouTube fans had first thought, but it has now been revealed that he is actually shouting “Fenton”.

Goodyear said:

“We were filming the deer and all of a sudden this man came from behind us and was agitated to say the least because he had lost control of his dog.

“The dog chased after the deer and I think the owner feared he would never see his pet again.”

He then added:

“The deer scattered everywhere and went across the road. The dog then disappeared into the woods.”

Goodyear has said that since releasing the video he has been flooded with requests for him to make an appearance on a number of television shows, both in the UK as well as internationally.

Mr Goodyear said:

“I’ve been inundated with people from CBS, CNN, Good Morning America, German Newspapers — I don’t know what to do — I might get Max Cliffod on it!”

This YouTube video has turned out to be so popular that the name Benton had been appearing recently as one of the highest trending positions on Twitter.

The owner of Fenton has not yet been identified and this could be a result of the possible prosecution he could face.

The Royal Parks has released a statement saying that dogs must be kept on their leads at Richmond Park and be kept under control or their owners could “risk persecution”.

It has been estimated by the charity Friends of Richmond Park that an estimated six deer are killed in and around Richmond Park every year as a result of uncontrolled dogs.

David Walliams, part man, part comedian, part fish, rescued a dog that got into difficulties whilst swimming in the Thames on the latest leg of his charity swim.

The star of Little Britain and Come Fly With Me was approaching Coockham Lock, Berkshire, on his gruelling 140-mile (225K) swimathon along the UK’s most famous river, when a Labrador named Vinnie leaped off the bank to join him.

Vinny’s owner, Gina Fidler, explained that her dog has a fixation with water: he has a bad hip, and undergoes regular exercise sessions in a pool, which help to alleviate his symptoms. She said:

“He’ll jump in at any opportunity.”

Taking a “humungous leap” into the water, the fearless Lab startled 40-year-old Walliams, who turned around to see what the commotion was. However, Vinny soon came unstuck as the bank was at least 3 feet higher than the water, and he couldn’t climb out. Noticing he was in trouble, Walliams swam towards him and helped him up onto the bank, before continuing on his way.

Walliams has undertaken the challenge in the name of charity Sport Relief. After seeing the conditions in which children on the streets of Kenya live, he took on the mammoth task. Incredibly, the distance he is swimming is the equivalent of crossing the English Channel seven times.

Ms Fidler was glad for the star’s help, but found the whole incident “surprising and a little bit embarrassing”. We’re sure that Vinny would have retired to his dog basket, along with a blanket and a couple of dog treats, to recover from his ordeal.

A man has been fined £80 for not keeping his skateboarding dog on a lead.

Jonathan Fell was also threatened with more serious legal action if he fails to keep his Lakeland terrier Bodhi under control.

Bodhi is usually a very popular attraction in Brighton, East Sussex, where he performs all of his skateboarding tricks. He has also become something of an Internet sensation and has over 20,000 followers on YouTube, and has even appeared in a brief clip on a Britain’s Got Talent episode.

However, two women complained about the daring dog as they were walking and then tripped over the skateboard that was in the middle of the road. The council then decided to take action against the dog and issue an £80 fine.

Jonathan, a 51 year old landscape gardener, said:

“Bodhi is always under control. He loves skateboarding and is not a criminal. It’s something that makes people laugh. I never trained him to skateboard, it’s just what he loves to do.”

The council also released a brief statement about the incident:

“Mr Fell has 14 days to pay up; otherwise he will be forced to appear before magistrates and could face a £1000 fine. We know Bodhi’s antics are an amusing sight and the dog and spectators appear to enjoy it. But when people start getting hurt and we receive complaints we have a legal duty to act. Bodhi remains free to skate in local parks – but not in dog-free areas.”

Yes, you heard that correct… a dog… as mayor. It is America after all.

Lucy Lou, a brown and white border collie, came first in the race to become Mayor in the town of Rabbit Hash, Kentucky. However, it wasn’t plain sailing – she had to fend off some stiff competition in the shape of a possum, a donkey, a cat and nearly ten other dogs for the hotseat.

The only human to run for the post finished in a miserable last place.

Terrie Markesbery, manager of one of the town’s main attractions, the Rabbit Hash General Store, heaped praise upon the politically inclined pooch, and said:

“She’s famous for greeting the public. When you get out of the car, she comes right up to you.”

The mayoral race began when the incumbent, Junior Cochran, passed away. Junior was a black Labrador, and had held the office for four years.

Lucy Lou is already a famous face around the hamlet, which has just seven buildings across three acres, as she features on the label of a locally produced wine. Luckily for her, she doesn’t have much to do in her new job apart from greeting tourists and other ceremonial duties.

Markesbery added:

“She’s perfect for the job. It’s a low-paying, highly visible position.”

“She has to do a lot of footwork.”

No doubt, she will be treated to a brand new luxury dog bed and lots of dog toys to go with her mayoral chain and robe. It’s not know however whether she harbours any great ambitions such as senator, governor or, dare we say it, president. They elected Bush, so why not?

Stewart, 69, needed nearly ten stitches to her top lip after her pet French bulldog, Francesca, administered a textbook smack in the mouth.

The TV presenter said that she leant over to her dog to “whisper goodbye” to it while it was sleeping. She recounted on her blog:

“I was rushing to New York at 9 o’clock at night leaving my home and my little dogs were all a little upset with me — they had been lonely — and it was dark in the kitchen and they were asleep and I wanted to say goodbye to the them.”

“I must have startled her, because she bolted upright with such force that she hit me in the face like a boxing glove hitting an opponent’s face.”

“’I was entirely startled and my neck snapped back. I felt a bit of whiplash as blood gushed forth from my split lip.”

Stewart made it to hospital, where doctors patched her up and sent her on her way.

She is best known for her lifestyle TV shows where she offers advice on cooking and decorating your home, and did a stint of porridge after lying to investigators about a sale of shares.

Ever critical of all things domestic, she had a pop at the hospital’s décor, writing:

“The ceiling border in the little patient room could use some updating.”

We at Dream Dogs think that if her surgeon had known what she was thinking, he may have given her more than nine stiches in an effort to keep her quiet.

In case you were unaware, today is ‘National Dress Up Your Pet Day’. Although you can conceivably dress up just about any pet (my pet iguana looks swell in his Boba Fett costume), dogs are easier than most to do so. This may be due to their easy going nature, a willingness to sacrifice their dignity for a new dog toy, or even from a genuine love of dressing up.

If you’re planning on fitting your dog out with something other than his usual velour tracksuit or bandana and shades, there are a couple of safety issues to be mindful of.

Your dog’s wellbeing is paramount. His costume should not have any parts that may cause him injury, or can easily come loose and pose a risk of choking. Your pooch will be curious about what you’ve done to him, and may inadvertently pull a part of his costume off and swallow it.

His comfort is also important. Choose something that will fit him easily without forcing it upon him. After all, National Dress Up Your Pet Day is supposed to be fun for him too, so a reward or two may be in order.

What’s the use of dressing up your pet if you’re going to stay in the house all day too? Why not take him for a walk and give him the opportunity to strut his stuff.

It’s not unusual for a dog to chase a cat up a tree, but it is when the moggy in question is a mountain lion and the dog is a Jack Russell.

Chad Strenge, of Colman, South Dakota, heard the commotion whilst at home on his farm. He went to investigate, and discovered that Jack, his Jack Russell terrier (very clever with the names these Americans), had chased a mountain lion up a tree on his land.

Now, you really have to imagine the scene here. Jack Russell Terrier – Mountain Lion. One is a short, snappy dog – the other is a very large predator.

After spending some time clinging to the top of the tree, the mountain lion, also known as a cougar, made a break for it and, with Jack’s assistance, Mr Strenge chased it down and shot it. You could have guessed that a story involving a wild animal and an American would have ended in one shooting the other.

The lion weighed in at 150lb (68kg) – a full 133lb (60kg) heavier than the plucky terrier.

Mr Strenge praised his dog, commenting:

“He trees cats all the time. I suppose he figured it was just a cat.”

Jonathan Jenks, a professor and expert on the migration patterns of mountain lions, stated that a hunter would usually need at least three dogs to chase one up a tree. Speaking to newspaper The Argus Leader, he said:

“It very well could have lost a territory and decided to take off from the Black Hills and head this way.”

The cougar was taken to South Dakota State University for study, and Arden Petersen, a spokesman for the Game, Fish and Parks Department of South Dakota confirmed that no charges will be made against Mr Strenge.

Residents of South Dakota can lawfully kill cougars when they feel that they are threatening the lives of their pets, livestock or themselves.

Isn’t that lucky, but perhaps not for the cougar.

We’ve all seen surfboarding dogs, skateboarding dogs and dogs doing ballet, but are there any dogs who crave a slightly faster speed? Maybe something powered by engines, with four wheels and the ability to go off-road?

With this burning question ringing in my ears I headed for YouTube to see if I could find any videos of dogs riding Honda quad bikes – because there’s just something funny about a dog sat on a quad bike as it speeds over the fields, or through the snow in some cases.

This first video features a Labrador taking a serene ride on a quad bike, but because of his size he is able to reach, and operate the handlebars himself.

This next video shows a much smaller dog incapable of operating the quad bike on his own, but it’s just as well because he may have decided to run over his little pal who is running alongside it. Watch a farmer having a great time doing doughnuts in the snow on his quad bike while holding a small dog (who is reportedly loving it) and while another dog looks on in envy/fear – delete as applicable.

That’s it for now for the dogs riding quad bikes – we’ll look for some more comedy dogs doing things another time.

Tonight and, let’s face it, for most of this week and the coming weekend will see a whole array of whizzes, whoops and bangs going off in the night sky. It’s Bonfire Night once again, where children of all ages (from 1 month to 100 years most likely) gather around a fire while someone of a pseudo-responsible nature sets off fireworks in honour of, well, does anyone really care?

Yes it’s fun, it’s loud, it’s colourful and it’s ultimately very expensive (literally setting fire to money) but it’s also somewhat scary for small animals, especially those with finely tuned hearing such as dogs.

Bonfire Night may be fun for you and me, but for dogs like Scooby Doo it can be terrifying (well, everything’s terrifying for Scooby, but that’s another issue). Dog owners are therefore advised to keep their dogs indoors during this evening, and throughout the weekend, in order to protect them from the bangs that will sound all that more terrifying to their tiny, but very astute, ears.

If you have to go out tonight, either to work or to a fireworks display, remember to shut all of your windows tight to keep the sound out and, if possible, leave an item of clothing for your dog to sleep on so that he is reassured of your presence.

Happy Bonfire Night!
