How to travel safely with your dog
Most of us are well aware of the dangers of leaving a dog in a parked car but it is surprising how many dog owners fail to take proper care of their pets while actually travelling. From car sickness to the extreme danger of an unrestrained pet in the event of an accident, there are a number of reasons to take some basic precautions to keep your pet safe while out on the road.
In the event of an emergency stop, a small dog can be thrown forward with the weight of a small elephant, causing a serious danger to both him and yourself. It is recommended that you use suitable restraints to prevent injury. While there is no actual law concerning which restraints to use, a dog cage is the most secure solution and the method that professional dog breeders always use.
A less dangerous but still undesirable outcome of travelling with a dog is that your pet could become carsick. Travelling just after he has eaten will increase this risk, so consider feeding him after the journey. Most dogs, however, will soon get used to travel.
Dogs can also dehydrate while underway, particularly if they are stressed by the experience as they may pant more than usual and lose water this way. Take care to always carry water in the car to keep your dog hydrated.
Finally, when stopping the vehicle, think before letting your dog out of the car, making sure you keep a tight hold on his lead as you bring him back safely.
