New app to help people find their ideal dog

The New York based dog gift firm BarkBox has come up with an innovative new app.

The mobile application is designed to match people looking for a dog with one that needs a home.

BarkBuddy is an extremely simple app that can be downloaded free of charge. It is a database of dogs who are in shelters throughout the US and Canada. Anyone who is looking for a new pooch simply has to flick through the photos and save any dogs that they are interested in to their favourites tab.

Details of the dog’s breed, age, sex, and character are included in the listing. Would-be owners can also see if the pooch they are considering adopting has been spayed and whether they have any health issues.

The app is GPS enabled, so how far away the shelter is from the searcher is displayed on each listing. To connect to the shelter that is looking after the dog, all that the searcher needs to do is hit the home button.

There is also the option to narrow the search. Someone who knows that they want a small dog can use the graph display to narrow their search down to canines that meet that criteria. They can also narrow their search by breed, age and sex.

In just one month, the app has recorded 50 million swipes. The application lists dogs homed in the BarkBox’s own network of 2,500 shelters and those in the already successful PetFinder database. Currently, there are around 300,000 dogs listed.
