A two-year-old boxer dog suffered a mishap on Sunday February 7th 2012, as he slipped through the ice on a frozen reservoir in Clatto County Park. The cold conditions that has seen the United Kingdom dusted with snow over the weekend seems to have caused a problem for the dog, who required the assistance of fire-fighters to rescue him from the cold depths of the broken ice. This is just one of a number of similar cases that have happened as a result of frozen lochs and reservoirs.

The owner of the boxer dog made an attempt to reach and retrieve the dog on her own. Despite her efforts, a call was made to Tayside Fire Service who made an appearance at the scene and made use of sleds and ropes to save the dog. After 30 minutes of struggling, the boxer was brought to the surface, safe and sound when East Kingsway Fire Station members aided in the rescue. Although the dog was said to be extremely cold and rather exhausted after the ordeal, the pet was transferred to a vets nearby, where treatment and care was given.

With the landscape around the United Kingdom looking extremely beautiful and breath-taking due to the freezing conditions, Keith Dyer, who is a station manager at Tayside Fire Service offered some advice to people hoping to make the most of the countryside. Keith Dyer said:

“Whilst we do not wish to discourage people from enjoying the countryside it is important that the public are aware of the hidden dangers.”

One lucky dog that needed a home has been granted his wish by the kind-hearted workers at Loughborough’s Dogs Trust facility. What’s even more remarkable about this story is the fact that the dog, who is a five-month-old Corgi cross named Cracker, was taken into the charity months before its opening was due to take place in the summer, later this year.

Colin and Pat Gee from Hathern immediately fell in love with young Cracker when a staff meeting regarding the preparation for the Dog’s Trust opening saw four pooches brought in. These dogs came from a nearby dog rehoming facility in the Kenilworth area. Following the connection, Colin and Pat managed to home Cracker the following day.

This success will surely be a stepping stone to further achievements for the facility, especially since the doors are yet to officially open. Corgi’s new family are taking great care of him and he has settled nicely, much like his fellow Beagle cross friend Louie, an 18-month-old who also managed to get a brand new loving family in the Rugby location.

The Loughborough Dog’s Trust charity is already gaining plenty of attention from locals and those who are involved with Kenilworth’s facility. The recent information meeting, in which the dogs were introduced, welcomed over 1,000 people. The support and love of the community is set to ensure any abandoned dogs are taken care of appropriately with the tender loving care dogs need. As for Cracker, Pat Gee has said he is turning out to be a ‘real star’.

Almost two weeks after her encounter with rat poison, Mo is recovering incredibly well thanks to her fellow pooch, Molly. Mo is a four-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier and, due to her curiosity and mischievous nature, a day of playing turned into a catastrophic event. Residing in the Somerset area, Mo’s owner Debbie Perry allowed her pet dog to roam around outside, but a second of leaving Mo to explore meant that she was faced with a near death experience.

An outhouse near Mo’s home was laden with rat poison, to deter any vermin from the area. Despite this being a useful tool to maintain the location’s cleanliness, Mo was intrigued by the poison and made the bad decision to eat some. Following consumption, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier’s health began to languish rapidly, leaving Debbie to frantically call for help from a close friend.

Mo underwent some tests to determine how badly the rat poison had affected her and the results displayed a decrease of red blood cells. Mo’s level of red blood cells was almost half the amount it should have been, proving that it was either a blood transfusion or death for the poor dog. An unfortunate discovery that the nearest blood bank was over 200 miles from their current location meant that Debbie’s friend Catherine Butler gave a helping hand, in the shape of her dog.

Catherine’s pet dog Mollie, a Newfoundland, had a pint of blood taken and transfused into the Staffordshire Bull Terrier’s body. It was this swift decision that led to Mo’s health improving. Following the ordeal, Mo returned home within two days. This exceptional result would not have been possible should Mo have not had a transfusion within 24 hours.

For many dog walkers, it’s important to have a large space to walk a pet companion. Dogs need plenty of fresh air and space as a way of escaping the indoors and keeping fit. The Parks Trust, based in Milton Keynes, recognise this and are planning an open evening for pets and owners to attend. The main purpose of this evening will be to discuss options for the dogs and all related details surrounding the park itself.

The opinions of many dog owners will help The Parks Trust expand their facilities for dogs, which could in turn attract more visitors from various locations. Any information can be expressed as a way of allowing visitors to give their thoughts and make changes to improve the sensible ownership of dogs.

Milton Keyne’s parks are a popular destination for people to let their dogs roam, whether it’s Shih-Tzu or a Siberian Husky, the Parks Trust is anticipating a great turn out for the event. A good turn out could mean more regular events for dogs, allowing owners to befriend one another and learn more about different breeds of dog.

For anyone who wants to broaden their knowledge and equally discuss matters meaningful to dog lovers, the open evening will take place on Thursday 23rd February 2012 in Campbell Park Pavilion, 1300, Silbury Boulevard, Milton Keynes MK9 4AD. Guests are advised to arrive before 7pm for a session that will last approximately 90 minutes.

Dogs have always been great, friendly companions, hence the Man’s Best Friend title, but nothing comes close to the valuable help provided by a Yorkshire Terrier named Maisie, who recently alerted an owner that his house was up in flames. The local canine managed to use initiative to run to the location of the owner and encourage him to come home and find help for the situation.

On Saturday 21st January 2012 at approximately 6pm, Maisie noticed flames and smoke bellowing from a house in Limes Road, in the Hardwick area. Mr. Whitmore, the owner of the house resides there with some lodgers, as well as his wife and children. At the time of the incident, Mr. Whitmore was in his local sports and social club, before he was greeted by Maisie, smelling of smoke.

Maisie impressed local neighbours after running a total of 350 yards from the burning building to the local sports and social club. Maisie was in the kitchen of the building when the blaze started, which is said to have begun as a result of something being cooked on the hob. When Mr. Whitmore was alerted of the incident, he called fire fighters.

An hour after the beginning of the fire, the fire department put the fire out with the use of breathing equipment. Thankfully, due to the Yorkshire Terrier’s fast reaction, no one was hurt in the process. Although the bottom floor of Mr. Whitmore’s house was badly affected by smoke, it appears that only the kitchen really experienced the majority of damage from flames.

On Saturday last weekend, Tig, a female Jack Russell, was faced with a terrible ordeal when she found herself stuck in an underground tunnel in the Dundee area. Thankfully, Tig has been returned to her owner after 26 gruelling hours alone, with the help of a dog rescue team in Macalpine Road – and a bit of chicken. This unexpected experience may have worried her owner and those trying to help her, but Tig remained unharmed and was eager to fill her belly when she was released from the tunnel.

The ordeal began when Tig was doing her regular habit of chasing rabbits in the fields some yards from William Fitzgerald Way. As Tig’s owner Ged allowed the Jack Russell to explore, a rabbit appeared, encouraging the mischievous canine to chase the rabbit. As the rabbit crept back into the underground burrow, Tig decided to immediately follow it into the tight, compact enclosure.

Following the incident, Ged waited approximately five hours for the Jack Russell to reappear, but to no avail. As 7pm drew closer, Ged knew he was to make his way home and try to rest up for the night. Despite his efforts, Ged said:

‘I never slept all night and I was back at half six in the morning shouting on her.’

After some time scraping mud away from the opening of the underground tunnel, Ged realized his pet dog was too stuck to be removed without some kind of assistance.

The SSPCA had had no luck, so local fire fighters made their way to the fields at approximately 10.30am on Sunday, before leaving for other duties. Upon their return at 2pm that day, the fire fighters made use of a 5 foot pole and a quality fibre-optic camera. After two hours of locating the Jack Russell and luring her with chicken, Tig appeared dirty, but happy. Ged has thanked the dog rescue team for their hard work and prompt reaction, due to Tig being short of food at the time of being trapped. Despite lack of food, Tig is now healthy and back in the arms of her owner.

For many people, living with a disability can prove to be a major burden, especially when it comes to performing everyday tasks. Despite the challenge that these individuals face on a daily basis, some very special dogs have come to assist with particular duties that can incredibly relieve the stresses for those with disabilities. A volunteer group based in Oxfordshire called ‘Dogs for the Disabled’ have managed to construct a team, without the help of any government funding.

‘Dogs for the Disabled’ managed to accumulate fundraising amounts of over £15,000 last year, as a way of employing the help of more dogs to be companions and helpers to those affected by a disability of some kind. The very talented and friendly dogs are frequently boarded for training by the volunteer group, with the very best treatment. This training has allowed each and every dog’s skills to blossom into something quite outstanding.

Normal tasks that appear simple to every other person are somewhat impossible for people who are tackling physical disabilities constantly. This is where the dogs come in and their training is put to good use. The dogs have so far managed to establish close bonds and partnerships with their new companions, with 575 partnerships having already been constructed.

For disabled people to live their life comfortably and embrace every moment, these unique dogs can provide a sense of independence and confidence. It is possible for each canine to open and close doors, pass things to their partners and also, pick things up should they drop on the floor. ‘Dogs for the Disabled’ are making a difference in their fundraising efforts everywhere, and continue to give dogs a new approach to life, as well as their new owners.

On the 11th February 2011, Wookie the Pomeranian dog will have his chance to steal the limelight, as he shows dog lovers the newly designed dog leads created by Promofix owner, Kathryn Holloway. Wookie is the pet dog of Kathryn who lives in Bridgnorth, Shropshire. Kathryn has recently been asked by show organisers if she would assist them with the promotion of an event in the near future.

With Promofix being a relatively successful company specialising in promotional merchandising, it is clear to see why Miss. Holloway has been chosen to help with the event. Despite the fact that her pet Pomeranian did not manage to gain a win in his section at the championship event, he gained a rosette. It was this that influenced Kathryn to design and build some personalised dog leads, so that other runner-up competitors could still gain something from their efforts.

A Top Dog competition will be taking place shortly in the summer months around Telford and the Shropshire area. Organisers of the competition will benefit from Kathryn’s dog leads as the leads will promote particular societies working with dogs. As Kathryn attends the events Wookie, her Pomeranian pet, will accompany her. Although the leads will be given to the qualifiers at the Top Dog competition, Wookie will surely be the first canine to try out the dog leads.

The effort Kathryn has put into creating the dog leads for the purpose of being a gift to competitors in the competition has been greatly acknowledged. Kathryn, owner of Promofix, said:

‘’Wookie had a wonderful time mixing with the many other breeds at the show and I am pleased to have created a special item for the Shrop-Dog Finals.”

This may be the beginning for Wookie the Pomeranian’s adventures of attending a number of dog-based events.

It was the Duchess of Cambridge’s 30th birthday on the 9th January and, while the whole nation revelled at the knowledge of Kate spending her first birthday as a royal, she was spending her time enjoying an adorable present. It has recently been revealed that, aside from the luxurious clothing and jewels that Kate received on the celebration of her birthday, she also received the gift of a pet Labrador puppy.

The Labrador puppy had a shiny black coat and was given to the Duchess by her new husband, Prince William. Kate is an animal lover and it appears she was thrilled with the new addition to her royal family. While the couple have not yet planned children, this gorgeous Labrador will be their new companion for quite some time to come.

Kate and William spend plenty of their time in Anglesey, Wales, and this is the spot where the couple have recently been spotted taking their Labrador puppy for long runs across the beautiful Welsh beaches. A source speaking on Monday 16th January 2011, said:

‘‘They are constantly in fits of laughter as the Labrador tries to catch them up.”

It is clear that this beautiful puppy was given to the Duchess of Cambridge as a reminder of her milestone birthday. With a beautiful home in Anglesey and plenty of grounds to take advantage of, the couple will undoubtedly be taking their pet Labrador for long walks on a regular basis. Due to Prince William owning a black Labrador named Widgeon when he was younger, it is probably this love for Labradors that has pushed the couple to owning another.

Emma, a mother of four, has said now how she will be extra careful to not let the dogs out of her sight.

The Shih Tzu, named Rollo, and Lula the Bichon Frise, were both taken from their own home on Monday, January 9th. With the dogs normally roaming around their garden, it didn’t occur to their owner Emma that there was a possibility they could be taken. Following the realisation that the two dogs had disappeared, Emma started her search for them.

After a stressful 48 hours, Emma and her family almost gave up hope of finding little Rollo and Lula. Despite this, faith returned when news came that Rollo had been taken by a male figure who had been noticed walking with the dog on the date of his disappearance. The man handed Rollo in to a nearby vet, where the dog’s owner was able to pick him up. His condition was stable and no harm had been done, apart from a small cut on the dog’s tail.

Lula the Bichon Frise however was passed over the garden fence, which was peculiar to understand. Although their ordeal must not have been pleasant, the dogs are now both happy and comfortable in their family home. A woman from the area has recently been arrested by police on suspicion of canine theft.
