Family receives gift of Siberian Husky

by Mark Glenning on January 10, 2012

A family in the Casnovia Township area of Michigan sadly lost their Siberian husky stud dog to a previous owner on Boxing day. To make them feel better after losing such a close companion in the family, a caring couple from the same area decided to give a warm, fluffy gift to the family; a Siberian husky puppy.

The couple, who breed Siberian huskies for a living, said how one of their dogs gave birth to a litter of pups at the beginning of November. To show their consideration, especially over the Christmas period, the couple offered the family a new pet husky free of charge. This came about after the couple (more…)

by Lianne Wilkinson on January 8, 2012

In a follow up story to one published on Boxing Day, a caring family from Staffordshire has done a good deed by saving a dog’s life, when they found an abandoned bull terrier on New Year’s Day. Neighbours in the area were concerned about the dog’s welfare as she was seen wandering around Trentham with no place to go. Shortly after, she was rescued by a nearby resident who kindheartedly took the dog to a local veterinary surgery.

The bull terrier is said to be around two years old and appeared to be considerably underweight when she was discovered. The veterinary surgeon said the (more…)

Wolves became dogs without much human design

by Mark Glenning on January 5, 2012

A piece of recent research has suggested that the evolution of dogs was not necessarily caused by human intervention. The latest findings have indicated that the transition was a geographically uneven one. A prominent biologist called Susan Crockford has found a well-preserved Siberian skull from a creature that lived over 30,000 years ago; her studies of this find have suggested to her that the development of the modern dog was not primarily the consequence of a human act.

Susan Crockford has been part of an international research team. Together, they have collated evidence, which they believe indicates that wolves became (more…)

Dogs naturally calm nerves

by Vivien Richardson on December 30, 2011

With the cost of attending university due to rise, there will be yet more pressure on students to achieve the very highest grades. Some will become very nervous indeed and this will affect their performance adversely. A few may respond by taking pills, but students at the University of Arizona have found a much healthier and fairer alternative to be effective. Law students have discovered that stroking a therapy dog prior to critical examinations is beneficial.

Therapy dogs have been used in the United States for some time. However, using them at university prior to examinations other than as individual dog owners (more…)

European dogs derive from some Asian breeds

by Mark Glenning on December 28, 2011

New research has shown that the origins of dog breeds in the western world are different from what was previously first thought.

It was discovered through the research that dogs which came from ancient south-east Asia had a substantial influence on dog breeds in Europe, as well as in the United States.

Initiated by a team of researchers at the University of California (UC), Davis, a study looked into the theory that most of the canine breeds in the western world originally derived from dogs which hailed from the Middle East and also from early western civilisations.

It was found that this idea is unlikely to be correct, due to it appearing that pet dogs in Europe and in the US actually originate (more…)
