Canine Partners is a national charity that provides highly trained assistance dogs to people who have disabilities (www.caninepartners.org.uk).

Stephanie Read, who comes from Torquay, has Ehlers Danlos and is registered as blind. Stephanie received her dog, Vegas, from the charity in 2006 and three years later in 2009, Vegas received additional training from Guide Dogs so she could become a dual-purpose assistance dog and be able to safely guide a visually impaired person in an electric wheelchair. Stephanie spoke about how much of a difference Vegas has made to her life:

“Before getting Vegas, I was virtually a prisoner in my own home. I lacked confidence and felt isolated from the outside world. I needed help to get dressed and carry out the most basic domestic tasks, from answering the (more…)

Derrick and Patricia Thorman are a husband and wife from Washington in England. A recent trip to take their daughter’s pet dog, Macy, for a walk turned into a frightening ordeal. With conditions around the United Kingdom recently plummeting as low as -10 degrees, many ponds and lakes have frozen over. Although this has proven to be an exciting time for ice skaters, it is proving to be a major threat to pet owners.

As Macy ran ahead of the Thorman’s to chase a swan, the ice gave way beneath her. Despite Derrick and Patricia wanting to save the Whippet dog, they were helpless due to the unbearable temperatures and danger that lurked beneath. This worry prompted (more…)

Marian and Neale Stribling, the owners of this playful pup, had their fears alleviated after the staff at Cromwell Vets in the Huntingdon area successfully performed an emergency procedure to remove the toys.

The Golden Labrador encountered the incident after consuming the toys on two occasions, after mischievously stealing them from some of his other pet pals. Mrs Stribling said she was in ‘total shock’ when Chester (more…)

by Darren Jamieson on February 6, 2012

A two-year-old boxer dog suffered a mishap on Sunday February 7th 2012, as he slipped through the ice on a frozen reservoir in Clatto County Park. The cold conditions that has seen the United Kingdom dusted with snow over the weekend seems to have caused a problem for the dog, who required the assistance of fire-fighters to rescue him from the cold depths of the broken ice. This is just one of a number of similar cases that have happened as a result of frozen lochs and reservoirs.

The owner of the boxer dog made an attempt to reach and retrieve the dog on her own. Despite her efforts, a call was made to Tayside Fire Service who made an appearance at the scene and made use of (more…)

by Mark Glenning on February 4, 2012

One lucky dog that needed a home has been granted his wish by the kind-hearted workers at Loughborough’s Dogs Trust facility. What’s even more remarkable about this story is the fact that the dog, who is a five-month-old Corgi cross named Cracker, was taken into the charity months before its opening was due to take place in the summer, later this year.

Colin and Pat Gee from Hathern immediately fell in love with young Cracker when a staff meeting regarding the preparation for the Dog’s Trust opening saw four pooches brought in. These dogs came from a nearby dog (more…)

Mo is a four-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier and, due to her curiosity and mischievous nature, a day of playing turned into a catastrophic event. Residing in the Somerset area, Mo’s owner Debbie Perry allowed her pet dog to roam around outside, but a second of leaving Mo to explore meant that she was faced with a near death experience.
