When your new puppy has had time to settle into your home you will want to think about teaching him or her how best to behave. If you are going to train your puppy, you need to be armed with some tools to help you out.
A good collar that is comfortable and adjustable is essential so that you can attach a dog leash for training, and also so that your dog will be identifiable should he run off when you are outside. The collar should not be too tight, so that it isn’t in danger of choking your puppy. To train your puppy, you will need a dog lead. This can help you even in the home, when you want to lead your puppy to where you want him to go the toilet.
It can also be useful to have some dog treats on hand to help you with your puppy training. You will need these to help keep the puppy’s attention and reinforce their behaviour with the positive reward of a treat. Treats can improve the effectiveness of your training when you respond to their good behaviour with a reward.
Toys are another positive reward for good behaviour from your puppy. Giving your dog a toy to chew after displaying good behaviour, or even rewarding them with a game of fetch, all helps to reinforce this behaviour.
Lastly and most importantly, you will need lots of patience and persistence. Not easy in the face of a cute but wilful puppy – but it will be worth it all in the end.
