One dog rescued, one dog lost at sea

One dog was rescued from the sea, near Sunderland, but a second dog was lost as the two chased each other into the waves. A Staffordshire Bull Terrier chased a Jack Russell into the sea, falling into difficulty and prompting two men to dive in after them.

As the two men themselves struggled, the RNLI were called to assist. One of the men made it ashore with the Jack Russell, but the second man had to be rescued by emergency services. As he was taken to hospital, the RNLI lifeboat attempted to look for the second dog, without success.

Paul Nicholson from the RNLI Sunderland stated:

Once it was confirmed that the two men were safely ashore our volunteers carried out a search between Roker Pier and the Marriott hotel for a distance up to one mile offshore in an attempt to locate the missing dog.

The RNLI gave up the search for the dog after an hour.
