Is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it’s Superman… well, sort of. Actually it’s a man wearing a Superman T-shirt (and JUST a Superman T-shirt) who has acted just like the real Superman by saving his family, and their nine dogs, from a house fire in the middle of the night.
Thirty-two-year-old James Irvine was awoken in the early hours of the morning by a fire started by a neglected candle. James, wearing just his Superman T-shirt that he sleeps in, found his front room ablaze. He threw water over the fire before ‘flying’ through a burning doorway to rescue his wife Paula, as she slept in the conservatory alongside the family’s Great Dane (Willow) and the dog’s litter of seven puppies.
James then flew upstairs to rescue his children, four-year-old Joseph and three-year-old Lottie. After rescuing the children, Superman re-entered the house to rescue the puppies and Blitz, another Great Dane.
Brave James, buoyed by his success, continued his rescue spree as he saved the soft toys of his children, before the fire-brigade arrived.
His wife, Paula, stated:
The fire service told us that they would have been puling out bodies if James had slept two minutes longer. He saved us all.
Joseph, their four-year-old son, exclaimed:
He was a real hero! I saw the fire was big when he was pulling me away from the house – and he put it out with buckets of water.
When finally James stopped for an interview, and swapped is Superman guise for than of mild mannered father of two, James Irvine, he commented:
I woke up to hear a sound that I knew shouldn’t have been there.
When I reached the door at the bottom of the stairs, I could hear a loud crackling which turned into an intense roar when I opened it.
I didn’t really feel the heat at the time because I think I was running on adrenaline.
I was on my hands and knees as low as I could get, trying to take in clean breaths of air.
