British broadcaster and horticulturalist Monty Don OBE and Radio 2 presenter Jo Whiley recently unveiled a special dog garden they designed for the Chelsea Flower Show.
The collaboration is Don’s first design for the annual event and was created for “man’s best friend” and their owners to make the most of.
Commenting on the “Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and Radio 2 Dog Garden”, Don said that he hoped it would be exemplar of various elements that dogs will love, irrespective of horticultural trends.
At the garden’s heart is a featured mown lawn, which is designed with various canine pastimes like napping, sprawling, itching, scratching, flopping, rolling, flopping and chasing tennis ball. Another key element is a big tree, planted to cast shade over the grass for stretching out and keeping cooler on warm afternoons.
Spring bulbs have been planted in the lawn to create a tamer version of a wildflower flower meadow and brick paths form routes throughout the garden, with one leading up to the summer house.
The goal of the garden was to motivate other British gardeners to make dog-friendly areas of their own on their properties. There are plans for the considerately crafted display to be meticulously replanted at spaces across the country. With Chelsea Flower Show now over, the display is set to be replanted at London’s Battersea Cats and Dogs Home, where the rescue animals can enjoy it.
Queen Camilla has adopted two Jack Russell Terriers from the charity called Beth and Bluebell, and they will feature on one of the paths in the garden.
A dog owner since the early 80s, after convincing his parents to buy a Yorkshire terrier named Sadie, Darren created Dream Dogs so dog owners could find the best dog related information on the Internet.
