- A full health examination should be required to eliminate any possible issues, including hip dysplasia and arthritis, which can be common in Cocker Spaniels.

- Good temperament - is he good to live with and good with other dogs? This will depend on whether you want to breed for working or household Cocker Spaniels.

- Consider using an older Cocker Spaniel stud to eliminate the risk of any health issues, as they can be prone to particular health concerns. Choosing an older dog will also show their temperament when fully matured. However, avoid using a stud older than 10, as this can affect their fertility.
- Ask for the genetic test results of the stud, including the previous health and life span of their ancestors.
- A well-bred Cocker Spaniel is calm and sweet-natured. Ask to see the stud in person before deciding – photos and videos can sometimes be misleading.
