Chihuahuas are one of the most destructive dogs in the world, it’s official!

If you’re particularly house proud, you may be wondering what breed of dog is the most destructive in your home. Large dogs can be destructive, but smaller ones are just as bad, it seems.

According to the home insurance provider, Esure, the little Chihuahua is the second most destructive dog breed, and has been responsible for the second highest amount of insurance claims due to damage created by a dog.

The Chihuahua, just pipped by the Great Dane, notched up average repair bills in the UK of nearly £700 in damages during their lifetime. The survey by the insurance broker covered almost 3000 dog owners in the UK, and found that the Chihuahua, Bulldog, Dachshund and Beagle were in the top ten, along with the Great Dane.

Soft furnishings and electrical goods were among the most claimed for items, as the dogs used them for chew toys.

An interesting finding from the survey was that the size of the dog wasn’t proportionate with its potential for destruction. Small dogs can destroy just as well as large dogs, and puppies were the most likely to cause a breakage.

  • I have had Border Collies before and they were very distructive. My little Lucy passed and I reccently bought Chihuahuas (age 2 and 4 years old), they are good as gold.

  • Well duh, its how you look after and train them. I have four Jack Russell Terriers, two are the parents of the other two, and two Dobermann, the puppies only chew because they don’t get enough toys and attention, the other dogs if trained coorectly, as are mine, won’t chew anything.
