You don’t expect dogs to get in the way of training for the Olympics, however that’s just what happened to Virgilijus Alekna, a two-time Olympic champion in the discuss. He was training for the Beijing Olympic games in Lithuania at the weekend, but had to stop because the practise venue he was using was covered in dog mess.
The stadium in which he was training had been used for a dog show that weekend, and it hadn’t been cleaned up.
Dogs were doing what animals usually do, defecating and peeing.
There were lots of dogs and they have left lots of things behind … and nobody even tried to collect them.
I have no idea how can I train in such conditions … and who would clean the discus after every throw.
He is now looking for an alternative venue to train in Lithuania, and believes he’ll find one in Kaunas. Alekna is 36 and won gold in the discuss in 2000 and 2004. He’s now going for his third victory in a row.
