One of the most daunting tasks for puppy training is house training them. The reasons for persevering are more than obvious. No one in their right mind wants to have stains on their carpets or the smell running through their home.
However, house training a puppy can sometimes be overlooked or not taken seriously. Starting this puppy training early is the key to success, especially with smaller dogs such as toy breeds, as they do have a reputation for being some what difficult to house train.
You must always take your puppies outside regularly, so they can get used to it. Try to do this at the same time each day through out the day, as they then learn to anticipate when they can go and have less accidents indoors.
If your puppy gets used to going the toilet in the wrong place, then it is much harder to get them out of this bad habit. Puppies are unable to stop themselves from urinating until they are older, but they can learn that outside is for going to the toilet, so you must let them out as early as possible.
If you take your puppy out for a walk on their lead, then ensure that they have enough time to sniff around, as they like to find the right spot. When the time is right, use a verbal command, and afterwards give your pup lots of praise and even a treat. In time, your dog will associate the command and the praise with going to the toilet.
Getting a puppy through house training will require some changes in lifestyle on your part. If you work, you will have to make sure you are up earlier to take let them out and also use your lunch times to ensure the do their business outside. If this is difficult to do, then you could hire a dog walker or ask a family member or friend to do it for you, as this is crucial time in your puppy’s life.
